๐Ÿ‚โ‚ช Still one of the biggest mysteries of pre-historic Greece: Knossos or the Labyrinth of the Minotaur! It is so big and has so many rooms that many called it a palace, but in 1974, geologist Hans Georg Wunderlich proposed a complete different thesis in his book "The Secret of Crete". Wunderlich argued that Knossos was a huge ceremonial death cult site. He pointed to unusual architectural features, like windowless rooms, narrow corridors, and basins he interpreted as ritual baths or for co**se preparation. Wunderlich noted that some of the stone in the temple seem to have melted but not due to fire of the buildings, but rather controlled fires in the rooms. He suggest that this was used to dry up the co**ses and create mummies that then could also be contained in in big pots (pithos) of honey. All in all, he posed that the central Minoan experience was deeply religious, somber, and focused on death, not on earthly pleasure or joy.

The Temple of Aphaia in Aegina, one of the islands near Athens, is among the most mysterious of antiquity. The identity of the goddess Aphaia remains unknown, though she appears to have been a local deity of Aegina, possibly linked to Egyptian or Minoan prehistoric worship. Nonetheless, by the time of Classical Greece, she was equated with Athena. The temple is remarkably elegant and sophisticated, especially considering its early date.

Why do you think that Buddhism merged so well with Hellenic Religion? Indeed, before the arrival of Alexander to modern-day Pakistan/Afghanistan, the figure of Buddha was aniconic, that is, it did not have a human form. But then, in the region of Gandhara - reconstructed below - Buddha appeared as a young Apollo. We want to hear your comments!

Not many people know that inside the Parthenon once stood a colossal statue of Athena made of pure gold and ivory (even more expensive than gold). This use of materials followed a long tradition of Near Easternโ€”yes, Anatolian, Levantine, Assyrianโ€”idols. This Athena was meant to be the greatest example ever created in that artistic tradition. It is believed that the statue was taken to Constantinople around 400 CE by Lausos, a romantic eu**ch with a collectorโ€™s spirit who served in the court of Theodosius II. There, it was displayed in his personal palace alongside other original and sacred masterpieces of Greek art: the Zeus of Olympia, the Aphrodite of Knidos, and the Hera of Samos. The palace was destroyed by an uprising...so, do you think that the remains of these statues still lay under the soil of modern Istanbul?

๐Ÿ’ง Water in the Parthenon?! Still, one of the biggest mysteries of Ancient Greece. Yes, there was a pool of water inside the Parthenon, just in front of the statue of Athena. What was it for? Some believe it was used to enhance the lighting, acting like a mirror to reflect light. Others suggest it helped humidify the space to better preserve the 12-meter-tall statue of the goddess Athena. And some think it was meant to provide water for cleaning the statue during an annual ritual. What do you think? Why do you think there was a pool of water in the Parthenon?

Did you know that the Parthenon housed inside some of the biggest treasures of its time? There were Persian spoils of war, hundreds of gold wreath crowns, dozens of incense burners, chests, ceremonial beds, and innumerable shields, all gifts to the goddess Athena as offerings. They also acted as bullion, and if needed, the metal could be melted down and reused.
