A two-storey extension to one of a pair of cottages in Old Roehampton. The front of the house is Gothic revival, but the rear is more prosaic.

Our extension involves removing a cold conservatory and creating a lightweight timber extension that reuses the existing plinth on which the conservatory stands – saving cost and environmental impact, whilst echoing the nearby 18th Century Kings Head pub.

The plan follows this plinth with the exception of a splayed bay giving access to the garden, which is supported off a single post, making the foundation economic. This post is expressed by extending it upwards, thus also enabling it to be used to support a bird feeder and bird bath.

The position of doors and windows allow these to be watched from the table inside. The form of the extension converses with, but does not ape the host building – the broken ridge of the roof rhyming with hipped gable of the French gothic house, the curve of the plan repeating that of windows arches on the front elevation.

The addition is contextual, yet resonant, providing the possibility of what Aldo van Eyck described as “the persistence of scope… for undefined and latent multi-meaning”.

Artichoke House is to stand on an extremely tight site currently occupied by a garage and shed in Parsons Green. A basement is excavated to maximise the house's area whilst the upper floor is set well back from the boundary to satisfy the planning constraint that the house should not be overbearing to its neighbour.

In its external treatment the house mediates between the adjacent late 19th century terraced houses and its other neighbours – two blocks of mid-20th century social housing. The house's entrance is marked by a recessed lantern (which also enlivens the street) and a cast bas relief frieze depicting artichokes. Before the borough of Fulham was built up, it was of one of the most concentrated areas of market gardening in Britain, with artichokes being a staple crop.
