Happy New Year! 🏮🐅劤쾨우있 (xīn nián kuài lè)
From China’s incredible range of dialects, there are dozens of greetings for the ‘Spring Festival’ that marks the changing of the years and is celebrated across the world. The Chinese zodiac, based on the Chinese Lunar Calendar, is among China’s most popular global cultural exports, making Chinese New Year a key community event in major cities worldwide, such as the colourful, noisy celebrations staged in London’s Chinatown, just across the road from TDS HQ.

2022 sees the Year of the Tiger (combining, this year, with the heavenly element ‘Water’), starting from Feb. 1st 2022 and lasting to Lunar New Year’s Eve on Jan. 21 2023. In the zodiac’s 12-year cycle, the Tiger ranks third among the animals of the Chinese zodiac: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig.

Those born in the Years of the Tiger are considered to be natural leaders, adventurous, ambitious and have a strong sense of justice… but perhaps prone to be a little arrogant and impetuous. For these ‘Tigers’, the zodiac offers advice on almost every aspect of their lives, especially relating to their prospects for love, wealth and health in the year ahead. This year includes everything from lucky numbers (1, 3 and 4 – but avoid 6, 7, 8), lucky flowers (yellow lily, cineraria), and lucky directions (east, north, south – but southwest is apparently unlucky).

According to Chinese legend, the Tiger was confident that no one could compete with its speed and vigour for the celestial race that would decide the order of the zodiacs. However, when Tiger climbed out of the river, thinking it was first, it was informed that Rat placed first for its cunning and Ox placed second for its diligence – leaving the true king of the jungle to settle for third place.
