I’ve been painting full time for four decades. I find it hard to believe but I have the proof:
1992 - Self portrait with Crocodile.
2000 - With an early Poolside painting.
2013 - In my flooded studio after a storm surge on the Norfolk coast.
2025 - With ‘Container’ newly finished for my exhibition in Genoa.

Beach ###, oil on linen, 1200x1200mm. Painted through November, the palette is as muted as the light outside the studio - but the beach remains hot with human connectivity.

Wow, what a month it’s been. Straight after the Genoa exhibition, my works were on show at my own exhibition on Portobello Road at the Affordable Art Fair and (and many thankfully sold!). It’s quite something to think how far two small Daler & Rowney brushes have taken me this year.

Thanks for all the continued support. ❤️

Paradiso. Open until Tuesday evening next week.

People sometimes ask - why beaches? Crowded beaches are unique social places. They are the only place we will undress in front of strangers and then sit or lie next, almost naked, next to an unknown person for the day. This isn’t the reason I’m painting them of course, just funny. They are places where we can suspend our concern about life, class, difference or culture in a collective act of leisure. Kind of like a modern Roman bath.

Really thankful for all the great feedback and response to the opening of my solo exhibition in Notting Hill, coinciding with Frieze London 2025. Didn’t expect such a strong reaction, as much as I obviously spend my life doing them - it’s nerve wracking when then in the public domain.

The exhibition runs until next Tuesday only, and is on at the

Tonight’s the night! ‘Paradiso’ open this evening. A mix of nerves and excitement as the doors open at 6pm.

I hope to see many familiar faces at J/M Gallery, 230 Portobello Road, W11 1LJ.

Delighted that the show has also been featured in Art Plugged. Thanks

James

OPENING THIS WEDNESDAY: Paradiso @ J/M Gallery

The title ‘Paradiso’ is inspired by Dante’s La Divina Commedia, an allegory I visit regularly for its imagery of paradise, purgatory, and hell. On the surface, each of my paintings portrays a moment of peace and relaxed enjoyment, but the reality, as in life, is more complicated. The quest for a perfect world always generates its own response in the form of alternatives—purgatory and hell. These concepts exist in my work, even though the original intention is a perfect moment.
