Phalaenopsis and More

Phalaenopsis and More I decided to create Phalaenopsis and More to try and fill in the gap for Phalaenopsis species in the UK orchid trade. Thanks,

Francis

I have been an orchid grower since 2002, and much to the surprise of all my friends, I have done this quite successfully indoors, in a small South London flat without investing in expensive or specialist equipment for my plants. I like to keep mostly orchid species, although like every other orchid grower, I do keep a number of orchid hybrids too, because they are so much easier to flower and, let

’s be honest, who doesn’t want to enjoy beautiful flowers every day of the year? I often find that, whilst there are plenty of Phalaenopsis hybrids and a few species both in orchid nurseries and the high street shops (i.e. florists and supermarkets), I always had trouble finding many of the more unusual species. My aim is to be able to offer as many Phalaenopsis species, as well as more unusual, novelty hybrids picked personally for being something unusual and more interesting than the plants already in offer somewhere else. But of course, this business will not limit itself to Phalaenopsis plants only (we are called ‘Phalenopsis and More’ for a reason!). You can always find other interesting orchids in our products section, and if you look on the ‘Bargain Corner’, you might find, from time to time, divisions and surplus plants from my own personal orchid collection at bargain prices. I can also give talks and lectures to societies and groups on a variety of orchid related topics. For a list of topics and my fees, get in touch by email, or leave a message on my phone.

My Platycerum alcicorne is producing new fronds for the very first time!

A basal frond is starting to expand now, and there is also another growth which will hopefully be one of the stag (fertile) fronds.

I've only had this plant since October, so feel pretty new to them!

A few days have now gone by, and this bloom of Masdevallia hirtzii has fully opened.

I live how it seems to glow in the morning sun of this cold December!

Wishing you all a wonderful, brilliant, glowing New Year in 2026!

Might all your wishes come true!

I have had this orchid for a few years, and it has finally decided to bloom for me, with, so far, 9 tiny buds, of which the first three started to open yesterday.

Mediocalcar decoratum is a mini-miniature, creeping, mat-forming orchid that grows in moist, shady forests of Papua NewGuinea, at elevations of 900 to 2500 metres. The tiny, cylindrical pseudobulbs grow close to each other on a small rhizome, and are topped with four narrow leaves.

The flowers are very much reminiscent of Chinese lanterns, or tiny bells, in shape and candy corn coloured in reddish-orange and yellow.

I have seen other plants in the same genus growing on fallen trees by rivers and streams whilst trekking through Sulawesii, and they can form huge clumps eventually... Looking forward to let this one grow into a specimen plant in years to come!

I am astonished to see that the few Masdevallias i acquired from last October in Devon did not only managed to establish themselves but produce new growths pretty fast, and now, the first one is opening a flower, with two more buds slowly maturing and a new growths starting a new spike on this miniscule plant of Masdevallia hirtzii.

A miniature species found in Ecuador and Peru, in cloud forests, at elevations of 1200 to 1500 metres, as a cool to cold growing epiphyte. The single flowers are borne on inflorescences about the length or a little taller than the leaves. Tubular in shape, are bright orange in colour. Really looking forward to these plants becoming larger and stronger, so I can truly enjoy their flowers.

I might cut the other spikes in the coming week, to ensure the plant uses the energy to produce more roots and growth instead. Any thoughts or advice would be welcome, as I have never before been successful with Masdevallias.

Once again, the ever reliable dendrochilum javierii (now Coelogyne) is in bloom! Only 9 inflorescences this year, but still looking gorgeous.

This species comes from the Philipinnes, where it grows at up 2400 metres of altitude in mossy cloud forest, producing multiple inflorescences that carry many small, yellow-green flowers.

I have had this plant now for a number of years, growing cool in my terrarium, which is in an unheated conservatory in South London (UK). Temperatures fluctuate between 8 Celsius in Winter to over 35 in Summer (but inside the terrarium might be a few degrees warmer in Winter).

Although the individual flowers are very intricate and beautiful, I never seem to have the spikes opening together, which would make for an amazing sight!

This lovely Lepanthes calodictyon has only been with me for just a little over a month. And it is clearly settling happily into the closed terrarium, growing with the other Jewel orchids I keep there.

A miniature epiphyte from Colombia and Ecuador, where it grows at low elevations in wet forests. The gorgeous, bowl-shaped leaves are exquisitely adorned with an intricate tesselated pattern and have these stunning ruffled edges. The inflorescences, thin, almost like a silky web thread, produce a series of sequential flowers, only a few millimitres across.

One open flower and a bud on one leaf, with two ther leaves growing tiny buds already, and a new leaf being produced in the month I've had it.

Can't wait until this becomes a larger specimen plant!

This is the beautiful terrestrial orchid Monophyllorchis maculata, which was gifted to me by Jorge, from recently for helping him out at the in Devon.

These gorgeous orchid, seldom seen in cultivation, hails from Ecuador and Colombia, where it can be found growing in wet montane forests. The large heart-shaped leaves grow from a massive of tuberous roots on a long, 5 to 6 inches long purplish coloured stem. The leaves are nicely decorated with white broken lines going along the length of the leaf shape.

I just hope I can care adequately for this stunning plant and keep it going!

Thank you, Jorge!

This beauty has surprised me by having a sneaky spike hidden by other plants' foliage. Only 3 flowers, but nevertheless, beautiful!

Thos is Bulbophyllum Vindobona, a primary hybrid between rothschildianum and ornatissimum, which has sadly been sold for decades as the true Bulbophyllum rothschildianum, creating a confussion amongst orchid growers for many years!

Feeling super chuffed with this!

I wasn't going to take any plants to the Autmn Show today, as i only had one plant worthy of showing, but I did anyway. Not only did I win first place in its category, but it also won a trophy for best species on that particular category!

Got a little of people asking about it, and it certainly got loads of attention!

I've been busy making a large glass orb terrarium with ten different Jewell orchids I acquired recently from a fellow orchid grower on a Facebook group, and i have to say, I am very pleased with the result.

Now, let's hope they all survive!

A really interesting fungi growing amongst the discarded irchid pits in the greenhouse today... Any ideas on ID?

I've had some small, white ones growing on pits before, but never a large, bright yellow one before!
