(3/3) An important aspect of the Chelsea Townhouse renovation was improving the building’s energy efficiency. Double-glazed windows, internal wall insulation using wood fibre, and an insulated ground floor slab all contribute to its enhanced thermal performance. The façade’s London yellow stock brickwork was restored to its original state, further improving the home’s aesthetics.

(2/3) Maximising Space and Light - In response to the client’s brief for a spacious, open-plan layout, our design focused on enhancing natural light and creating a sense of openness. The removal of internal partitions and the introduction of a concealed steel framework into the building’s fabric allowed for the elimination of wall nibs and downstands, transforming compact rooms into generous, interconnected spaces. A new skylight above the kitchen floods the heart of the home with natural light, complemented with replacement sash windows and large garden-facing sliding glass doors.

(1/3) The refurbishment of Chelsea Townhouse in West London embodies a seamless blend of contemporary design and historical charm, thoughtfully designed by Patalab Architects to suit modern family living. Originally a two-storey terraced house with a lower ground floor, this building in the heart of the Chelsea Conservation Area was completely reimagined with the addition of a mansard roof extension, creating additional bedroom space whilst preserving the character of the area.

The seventh floor apartment looks out across the City of London with views of Paul's Cathedral and the Barbican. A key aspect was maximising these views as well as maximising ceiling height and space.

Primrose Courtyard House Desk

(3/3) In order to reduce weight and material waste as much as possible, the desk will be constructed from a lightweight lattice timber substructure cladded with formed solid surface panels to negotiate the double curvature and provide a seamless finish.

The slightly polished surfaces will help reflect natural light and greenery from the garden, creating a bright and healthy space. Whilst a linoleum inlay to the desk top will provide the perfect surface on which to write.

(2/3) As with all bespoke furniture, testing ergonomics is vital. In collaboration with the fabricator Isomi, the geometry was developed and tweaked utilising 3D CAD. This was then translated to a full-scale prototype for our client to test; it is now in production following very positive feedback and we look forward to see the final piece!

(1/3) Patalab are not only passionate about designing spaces, but also bespoke furniture.

Here at the recently completed Primrose Courtyard House, we take cue from the sinuous curves of the new mezzanine structure to provide an inviting, ergonomic and striking desk that complements the study space whilst guiding views out onto the lush garden.
