Celebrating symbiosis...
..today with yr4 at Barncroft Primary through replicating the horticultural practice of the indigenous peoples of Central and North America - growing maize with beans and squash.

Three Sisters. Tall maize creates a structure for beans to grow up, whilst beans fix and share atmospheric nitrogen and squash's wide leaves suppress weeds and reduce water transpiration.

Pairing this wonderful story of mutual benefit with one of my favorite songs!!

Great work to the Yr4s who meticulously transplanted their maize seedlings to their Edible Garden, joining the garlic, broad beans and peas.

Spring greetings from the Studio Cultivate team.

Though it didn't seem very Spring-like at our training day last week. Hats, thermals and waterproofs all round.

Anyway, it takes more than a bit of chilly weather to stop this team!! We explored expressive nature story-telling with the perennially fabulous before preparing a no dig bed at the SC allotment with hardy peas.

Big thanks to the equally hardy SC team for bringing such energy and insight to the day.

Moss Love
Alright all. So, so wet here!! Will the rain ever stop?

Merristems workshop power through and embrace the drizzle. Just like this moss.

Water means reproducing in the moss world and the Yr 6s at Rosendale Primary were busy today finding moss and it's sporophyte appendages. (Pic3)

We then mashed some of the moss into a moss slurry and painted around the playground. With a bit of luck we'll have moss propagating all over our brick walls and concrete surfaces in a few months.

Bumper!
Thrilled to return for Spring Term to a greenhouse scene of mass germination at school, Rosendale Primary.

For those of you who wanna crack on with some early year seed sowing, we're having big success with peas, sweet peas, broad beans and calendula.

Now bring on the warm weather!

Happy New Year everyone. Bestest of wishes from the SC Team and I for the year to come.

Hope you managed to enjoy some 'dormant' time over the holiday. Here's me breaking the festive-funk and thrilled to bits in happening upon these many, many Hazel catkins in freezing-cold Somerset this Christmas.

No dormancy for this Hazel tree mind!! Not a chance!! Hazel Resolution for 2026? Get reproducing, NOW!!

Here's the parent tree, straight out the NY starting blocks, quietly, busily spaffing (scientific term) bajillions of pollen grains from it's yellow catkin-flower-clusters, out into the crisp West county air in the vain hope of finding a tiny female flower. Good luck lads!

Thrilled to have dropped our brand new fungi workshop..

Mushrooms and Spores is a story-led, practical workshop that introduces Yr5 pupils to the incredible kingdom of fungi.

I spent a lovely grey afternoon foraging for Turkey Tail, Chicken of the Woods, Sulphur Cap and Scarlet Elf Cup; building message-carrying mycelium networks; creating spore-dispersing balloon puff balls and inoculating beech pellets with King Oyster mushrooms.

Anyone else much experience teaching fungi to kids? Super interested to hear your experiences, as it seems the subject is given a wide berth in the Key Stage 2 Science Curriculum!!

This is what a Snail Tent looks like....
.... according to a domestic-design minded group of Yr5 at Little Ealing Primary.

The mollusc in need of 'accomodation' is this beautiful Yellow Lipped snail who casually cameo-d with it's own shell spiral during the pupils' creation of their gorgeous nature spiral.

I asked the snail-tent-architects how this tent could be created by others.

Their answer- "Get a stick. Get a leaf"
