Defined by Federico Zeri as “one of the supreme names in Italian still-life painting”, the Master of the Acquavella Still Life is one of the most fascinating figures of seventeenth-century Rome. Active between 1615 and 1640, he has still not been identified with a specific artist. For this edition of Maastricht we delighted to present two large still-life paintings which brilliantly show the immediacy and powerful description of nature and human figures characterising this master’s style.

Amongst the marvellous works that we have chosen for this edition of Modenantiquaria, you will find this exceptional oil sketch by Giambattista Tiepolo. The scene depicts an episode from Plutarch’s Lives and shows Julius Caesar contemplating the head of Pompey. This oil sketch is linked to a painting commissioned from Tiepolo in 1743 by Francesco Algarotti for Augustus III, King of Poland and Elector of Saxony, which is unfortunately now lost. Our oil sketch remained in the collection of Algarotti and was later sold by his heirs.

Giambattista Tiepolo (Venice, 1696 - Madrid, 1770), Julius Caesar Contemplating the Head of Pompey, 1743, oil on canvas, 53.8 x 72.6 cm

A German-born artist of Dutch training, Johannes Lingelbach travelled multiple times around Italy during his career. During one of his trips to Rome, he visited Livorno where he was mostly impressed by the port that he sketched and revisited in several of his later works. In beautiful painting, the monument to Ferdinand I Medici on the right helps to set the scene in the port of Livorno, where Lingelbach depicts a moment of everyday life populated by sailors, elegant characters and beggars living side by side.

A versatile artist from Florence, Zocchi went to Venice around 1740 where he drew from the most famous artists in the city creating his personal and original style as brilliantly represented in this beautiful capriccio seemingly set in the Veneto countryside.

Giuseppe Zocchi (Florence, 1715-1767), A Capriccio of a Bridge Over a River, with a Sculpted Lion on a Pedestal in the Foreground, a Castle and a Renaissance Villa, oil on canvas, 50.5 x 71.8 cm

In the Four Seasons cycles, Winter is generally represented as a bearded old man in heavy clothing as to depict the rigidity of the season. In this marvellous large pastel, part of a set of four representing the Seasons, Rosalba Carriera, instead, presents Winter as a beautiful woman in a elegant fur. The characteristic coldness of the season becomes attractive thanks to Rosalba’s mastery in handling the details through refined colours and a perfect sfumato. An enigmatic portrait, Rosalba’s Winter is an exquisite example of the production of this eighteenth-century woman artist from Venice mostly famous for her pastel portraits.

Rosalba Carriera (Venice, 1673-1757), Winter from the set of the Four Seasons, pastel on paper, 54 x 65.5 cm

Winter is back in London! ❄️

Nicknamed “Velvet” Brueghel, Jan Brueghel the Elder was one of the most popular artists at the turn of the 17th century in Antwerp. The velvety character of his brushstrokes is well represented by the cold colours of this beautiful tondo. Brueghel paints a scene of everyday life, which is enlivened by the skaters enjoying the iced river depicted in the foreground. The minute details and the sapiently balanced tonal shifts on blue hues make the beholder feel the cold and the thrill of a wintry day in the Flanders. An equivalent result is achieved by Brueghel in the pendant to this marvellous tondo, depicting an autumn scene.

Jan Brueghel the Elder (Antwerp, 1568-1625), Winter Landscape with Skaters, oil on panel, 37.5 cm diameter

One of the most talented artists in 17th century Naples, Luca Forte (1615-ante 1670) is best known for his exceptional still-life paintings.

This beautiful garland is composed of several elements dear to Forte’s distinctive visual language, such as grapes, apples, quinces, rowan berries, pomegranates and many other kinds of fruit and flowers. The composition is particularly elegant and fascinating thanks to few original additions, like guinea pigs, lizards, wheat spikes and corn cobs, and the fantastic sottobosco in the background.

We would like to wish you a happy festive season with this colourful Neapolitan garland, in which you can get lost in discovering every little detail 💐🌾🦎
