On site in Liverpool

We are delighted to see our first Liverpool project - Salesian Sisters Convent is making exciting progress on site. This retrofit reimagines the existing convent building to provide a new two storey central link, chapel, community space and new home for the Salesian Sisters, who have worked in the Croxteth community since 1959.

The heart of the scheme, the central link weaves the two existing buildings together both socially, as a communal hall and in its material expression, with a raised diagrid of brickwork. The geometry is enforced by large diamond windows, due to be installed this week, will bring in abundant natural light.

With have been working collaboratively with Rodney Environmental Consultants on the M&E, Markhams on Costings, Alan Johnston Partnership on structural engineering, and FSEC UK on fire engineering. The vision is being brought to life brick by brick, by Wellcare Construction.

We are thrilled to share that our Head of Liverpool Studio Teresa Erskine has received the RIBA Haydn Smith Award which celebrates the best RIBA Advanced Diploma in Professional Practice in Architecture (Part 3) submission across both 2023 cohorts at the RIBA!

Haydn played an instrumental role in the establishment of the RIBA in the regions and was a strong advocate of the link between education and architecture. His passion for professionalism led to the creation of the award for the best documentary submission.

Having graduated with distinction at the Mackintosh School of Architecture in 2017, Teresa has been with us at vPPR for the last five years gaining experience on a range of fast-paced projects, more recently leading on Leconfield Road, Two Hands Preschool and Camden Market Canopy.

The judges said:
"The experience gained is evident in the reflective writing throughout her submission, which is well-written and illustrated. I particularly welcomed and liked the decision to present a combined case study. As she says, “The projects have given me an extensive overview of the problems which can arise under different planning, procurement routes, site constraints and contractual issues.”

Teresa was presented the award at RIBA London by Paul Hyett, Architect & Expert Witness for the Grenfell Tower Inquiry & past President of the Royal Institute of British Architects.

Introducing Idlewild Mews, eight affordable houses for rent on a transformed unused backland site in Croydon.

The units are contained within a multi-faceted building where forms weave in and out in response to the narrow site, allowing for a design that ensures privacy for nearby residents while engendering a sense of community within the development.

This week we’re in Hooke Park with our students from INTER 13!

INTER 13 is investigating the role of museums in the environmental emergency, and seeks to rethink our relationship to the natural world through a cultural lens.

This year, we are focusing on the Natural History Museum’s collection of fungi—from mushrooms and mycelium to spores and psychedelics.

As a unit, INTER 13 is researching carbon sequestering materials, like mycelium, for their possible architectural applications.
