This proposal explores a contemporary extension to a Grade II listed home — clearly modern, deliberately restrained, and deeply respectful of the existing building.

Rather than mimic history, the new structure sits lightly alongside it, creating space for everyday life, gathering, and belonging. It’s about continuity, not contrast for its own sake.
We believe heritage should evolve with care. Good design can honour what came before while making room for how people live now — equitably, openly, and with dignity.
Architecture matters because it shapes who feels welcome, and who feels seen.

A WELCOMING ENTRANCE

A new design for the entrance lobby for a home in London. Bringing light into the heart of the home, and exploring different textures for the floor and walls.

Light, doors, a view down and across to a park.

What the photo doesn't show very well is an almost invisible clear glass balustrade.

It is there, though.

A great pic by Matt Clayton.

A 'shifting' window in a domestic kitchen, London.

One of the joys and challenges of good design is to find those special moments of quiet surprise which can, done well, elevate a proposal into something memorable.

If drawn from conversations with the client, their needs, the place, and sometimes even materials you want to explore, they allow for an opportunity to make sense of the design, and how we may interact with it.
...As part of a larger proposal which was shortlisted for an NLA 'Don't Move, Improve!' Award...

TAKE A SEAT.

Design for inside and out...... Here's a WIP mock-up for a chair we're designing, which will hopefully be delivered alongside a new community hall and maker-space we're also designing!

The main idea is to try to use as many of the offcuts and material waste from the building site as possible, and to repurpose these into furniture items for use in that building [when it's completed!]

WHERE'S THE DOOR?

Or, where does the inside end and the outside start? Sometimes, a lovely design can be developed which blurs the boundaries of inside and outside, to create a larger visual area, and a more flexible use of a tight space.

The pic shows a refurbishment of a proud Victorian period home, with a view from the rear garden into the new rear extension.

Matched tiles, robust wall materials and a dramatic glass roof all add to the creation of a kitchen and living area.

THE DETAILS OF DESIGN

A touch of colour and texture from the raw timber and plywood ceiling, the framing of this with the plain white walls and black staircase handrail, the glimpse of a domestic scene with the 'waffle house' framed picture on the wall, and the promise of a green landscape outside, with some flowers still in bloom. Pockets of light. Swathes of shadow.
