You can’t always get what you want…

It has been an interesting few weeks at Paterson Architects.

One recent project began as a carefully considered single-storey, two-bedroom home designed to work within a highly constrained garden site. After much design development, our clients belatedly let us know they definitely didn’t see themselves living in a ‘bungalow’, instead preferring a ‘traditional’, two-storey home with slate roof and render walls…

It is a reminder that design is a conversation, and flexibility is a part of the process…

Working in East Lothian, where planning policy is particularly restrictive adds another layer of challenge. This can be frustrating, it continually tests both our design creativity and understanding of policy, and it certainly doesn’t guarantee a successful outcome.
But we don’t write the rules, we endeavour to work as creatively as possible within them. Helping our clients navigate the process and, where we can, to realise their ambitions.

At the very heart of our design process is the goal of following the sun to optimize natural light. By considering the sun's path throughout the day and year, we create spaces that maximize daylight, reduce energy consumption, and enhance space with lighting that changes as the day unfolds.

…the first fully revised and expanded guide to the buildings of Lothian since Colin McWilliam’s pioneering volume of 1978, with new colour photography, maps, and plans to accompany the unrivalled coverage of the area. Lothian surrounds the capital city of Edinburgh, which has done much to influence the character of its buildings. Among these are some important medieval relics, including the internationally famous Rosslyn Chapel, the royal Renaissance palace at Linlithgow, and the ruins of great castles and tower houses.

We are delighted to have three of our projects mentioned in this new edition of, Pevsner Architectural Guides: The Buildings of Scotland, Lothian.

A typical Victorian home was built with little regard for site or orientation, with public rooms to the front and private rooms and servant space to the rear. Whilst this layout suited the relatively formal day to day life of a middle-class Victorian family, it no longer suits the more relaxed requirements of a large modern family.

Our client hopes to refurbish and reconfigure the layout of their home, and extend to the rear so as to enjoy the open aspect and views available to the west. Creating a practical multi-generational home with easy access to the extensive garden grounds.

The brief includes significant refurbishment of the existing fabric and will include stone and roof repairs, replacement windows, thermal upgrading and the installation of ASHP systems.
