Let’s talk hedging plants…there are various options available to suit different sites & specifications. Here is a hedge of Portuguese laurel (Prunus Lusitanica) that I planted last week for a client, who required something evergreen to provide screening for the cottage. Portuguese Laurel has smaller leaves than the commonly seen Prunus laurocerasus rotundifolia so is more inkeeping with the space. In addition, it will produce pretty racemes of white flowers which will complement the white hydrangeas planted in front of it.

Have you pruned your plum trees yet? It seems counterintuitive but plums should be pruned when blossoming or in mid summer otherwise they are prone to getting a fungal disease called silver leaf. Here is my massive tidy up from a few weeks ago (not sure where August went?!) as this plum should really be an espalier 😬.

You will notice that I also tidied & decongested the bearded iris that are planted at the base of the tree. They tend to flower best when baked by the sun. The soggy start to this year meant they were a bit of a non-event. Fingers crossed for next year!

Ok, so on a day like today we seem a long way away from the beautiful blooms of . However, February is one of the months in which is prune wisteria, the other being July. The rule is to cut back to two buds from the main stem in February, then to seven buds in July.

Here is one I pruned for a client earlier this week. It might seem drastic but wisterias put on a lot of growth throughout the year. Following this pruning rule will encourage flowers instead of more foliage.

I found this beauty bursting forth in the garden today- Winter flowering honeysuckle, Lonicera Fragrantissima. The sun made a rare appearance so I enjoyed a few hours catching up on some jobs. Given some thought it’s possible to have something flowering in the garden every month of the year. Thank you to for giving me a cutting when we first moved it, it is now a bush!

Autumn Jobs…Pruning. A couple of my roses have been suffering from wind rock after the recent storms so I have cut them back by a third and will do another third in February.

I have also been working on a fig which had gone awry from its wall training. Initially, the chop looks quite drastic but come the spring, the fig will be in much better shape.

Did you know there are 4 types of pruning? Formative, maintenance, regenerative & specialist. Details of these are a whole post in itself!

If you would like some help getting your garden winter ready please do get in touch.

How to keep a 3 year old busy whilst the garden is being battered by ? Seed planting of course! On Friday we took refuge in the greenhouse, planting up some seed trays with Larkspur, Phlomis & perennial sweet peas. Admittedly, it’s quite late to be doing this but storm aside it’s relatively warm still. If you don’t try, you never know!

A job from last week now the children are back at school- decongesting the irises!

Iris’s need their rhizomes to be baked by the sun in order to flower well and do not like to be crowded. Mine had become overgrown and tangled with creeping buttercup so I cut them back, lifted them all, removed any weeds, split them & replanted a handful.

I now have more irises than I know what to do with!

Rather than feel melancholy for the end of summer, I have started to get a flutter of excitement about next season!

Today, I potted the strawberry runners but left them attached to the mother plants. In a few weeks the runners will root & I’ll have free strawberry plants to start a new patch next year! My current patch has done a couple of summers, which is generally the lifespan of a productive strawberry plant.

Beautiful wildflowers! This is a field on the farm that has been planted with a two year legume mix which includes, but is not limited to, the chicory & clover seen here. Not only does it look lovely, it will also improve the soil quality. Furthermore, the number of pollinators that it attracts is amazing- the children have loved spotting bees & identifying butterflies!

Although this is on a commercial scale, what we plant in our gardens can also work 3-fold for us; look beautiful, increase biodiversity & improve the soil quality.
