So, my enthusiasm to get started sowing seeds early has somewhat backfired 😬 I now have lots of leggy seedlings and it’s still way too cold to plant them out so, the solution is to add an extra stage and pot them up into bigger pots, before they go into the ground. Trying to decide whether to put them into the growhouse, or whether that’s going to be too cold, as well, given there’s a possibility of SNOW next week! It’s all extra work but hey ho! We’ll get there in the end.

After high winds damaged the growhouse, I decided to get some thicker Perspex for the roof and make it non-opening, to stop the wind catching it in future.

I actually got the measurements right and with a bit of jiggery pokery and a teeny bit of help from Ryan, it now has a smart new roof 😁

I also ordered an opaque finish, as it’s south facing and gets almost too much sun, in the Summer, so now, it’s even better than it was before 👍

It’s such a fabulous little space to use all year, from starting off seedlings in the Spring to overwintering tender plants 💚

I’ve pulled up some of the Leeks that have over-wintered in the raised beds. They’re looking really good 💚
Prepping them outside by taking off a layer or two of the outer leaves and cutting the tops off, means they only need a quick rinse, when you bring them into the kitchen. These will be used to make Leek and Mushroom Risotto for tonight’s Dinner, with some fresh Sage, from the Herb Garden. Yum! 💚

The polytunnel is looking a bit grungy and bare, at the moment (first pic) so it seemed like a good time to remind myself of just how abundant it becomes in the late Spring and Summer.
So much promise! 💚
It will get a good clean, inside & out before starting this year’s planting. Watch this space!

Meanwhile, outside there’s not much happening yet. The growhouse was a victim of the Winter storms and is awaiting repair. There’s some veg in the raised beds that has overwintered and lots of Leeks still to pull up 💚

January and February can seem like cold, dark months that last forever but its the start of the growing year and you can begin chitting potatoes and sowing some seeds indoors. These are Red Robin Cherry Tomatoes, to give away at the Incredible Edible Ludlow Seed Swap, in March. It’s wonderful to see these doing so well after only a couple of weeks.

I’ve set up this page as quite a few people have said they’ve enjoyed seeing my posts about the garden. I really enjoy growing fruit, veg and flowers so this is an invitation to share a year of successes and inevitable challenges of growing your own 💚 I’ll include tips on when/how to sow things, lots of photos and maybe a few videos 😁
