This weeks gardening club for home educating families has been postponed until next Tuesday as I didn’t feel it safe to have lots of children running around a walled garden in this heat 🔥

We will be doing everything I planned for this week including some more planting out and watering, some summer solstice celebrations and looking at herbs.

The session is taking place at Within The Walls and is open to all ages. Even if you have younger children who haven’t started school yet you are welcome to come along.

Booking details are in my bio or feel free to message me 😀

I used to think growing sweetcorn wasn’t worth it because it takes up so much space.

But then I learnt how to make better use of the space by planting other plants with the sweetcorn.

The sweetcorn can be used as poles for climbing beans and the ground can be used to trail pumpkins underneath the sweetcorn 😀

Now my sweetcorn is 30cm tall the bean seeds went in today. Doing this will make better use of the space and fix nitrogen in the soil. Win win all round 🌽🫘🎃

If you’re growing courgettes, pumpkins or even mini watermelons or aubergines you can give the bees a helping hand by having a go at hand pollination.

It’s worth nothing that the male flowers always come first. You’ll probably have a few of these before you see any female ones with fruit at the end so don’t worry if they haven’t come yet.

Having a rural allotment has lots of positives (the wildlife being one of them) but I’m also facing a few challenges (the wildlife being one of them) and it’s rabbits that are causing me the most issues 🐇

They are digging up EVERYTHING and it means nets are now my friend.

I’m glad that i’m doing the allotment slowly because although there has been a lot of destruction it’s actually minimal really (besides the asparagus 🤣) and now I know I what I need to do going forward.

Also interesting that anything planted in the autumn / winter has been fine so I’ll be making sure I get lots of my perennials in next autumn / winter.

I also see all these moments as lessons I can pass onto anyone that comes on one of my courses. Up until now I haven’t had to deal with rabbits but now I am I can pass these learnings onto others.

I’ve had a few people ask me (mainly my friends) how my greenhouse plants held up not being watered for 6 days so I thought I’d give you an update.

As you may have seen from my previous video I gave everything a really good water before I went and mulched my tomatoes. I know it wasn’t boiling whilst we were away so I think that helped but overall I think it’s a good lesson in that plants are more resilient than we think.

There are many reasons I grow my own food and one of my favourites is not having to go to the shops after a trip or just having food available when ‘you have nothing in the house’.

Filled a tupperware with strawberries and raspberries ready for our breakfast for the next few days and got a garden full of salad to eat this week ☺️

Also realised I missed ‘the’ out of this sentence but decided not to change it 😅

The High Line was top of my NYC list and it did not disappoint. I spent ages looking at all the planting, oh and forget the backdrop, I was most fascinated by the advanced irrigation technology that means that the green roof system is able to capture and store storm water 🤪. Just seeing what it was like in the 90s to what they have created now for the environment and the NYC folks it was incredible.

Our little trip is now coming to an end and I have to say after much deliberation about whether we should go (because you know world politics) I’m glad we did. It really is its only little bubble.

Also I don’t think we could have picked a more vibrant weekend with the start of the World Cup, Pride and the Knicks winning the NBA, honestly they didn’t stop partying in the streets until 3am last night, it’s been one big party 🎉.

A June garden jobs video I made last year that I thought might be helpful again this year ☺️

Lots of taking care of those plants in June with pinching out, feeding and mulching as well as sowing to fill gaps that will arise from harvesting.

Off for a little trip with the hubby to celebrate 10 years being hitched and gotta prepare the greenhouse plants for a few days without me.

The watering spikes and make shift ollas will help with providing water to my plants over the next few days and I’ve given everything in pots a really good water. I’ve also mulched my tomatoes and filled trays with water to water my plants I’m waiting to germinated.

The weather doesn’t look like it’s going to be too hot so I think everything should survive (we will see next week) 🤞

See ya soon insta friends ✈️
