A small tree felling job for a regular customer. The tree was dead and needed removing to make space for a new one. Nothing went to waste.
It always pays to have the right equipment for these types of jobs. Safety is paramount. A quick risk assessment, check over tools and take it slow.

September is a busy time in the garden. Things can quickly change from summer to the onset of winter, so if you are organised you can really get on top of jobs now to save time and work next spring and to prevent having to work in colder, harsher conditions.

Now is a good time to start planting spring bulbs. The ground will still be nice and warm from the summer months, and it gives plenty of time for the new roots to bed in before the spring sunshine arrives.

It’s a good time to start thinking about pruning fruit trees and shrubs to maximise yields next year. As a general rule of thumb the sooner this is done after harvesting the better.

For impact in late spring and early summer, little beats the show put on by flamboyant bearded iris, flowering their socks off in vibrant colours. Summer is the perfect time to divide congested clumps of these plants, to ensure their flowering performance stays strong. It’s easily done, by lifting the rhizomes, separating them into sections, and replanting.

So far it has been a strange old year weather-wise. It seems nearly every day for the last month has been overcast with only the occasional break of sunshine in the early evenings. Everything in the garden has been slow, but lilies and dahlias are now starting to flower.

Primula veris

Few can fail to be moved by the sight of a bank of our buttery yellow native primula. Cowslips naturalise quickly and are suited to most soils in sun or the dappled shade of a woodland. Grow them with other spring bulbs where their dangling trumpet flowers will bring a wilder look to a scheme.

Garden looking good.

14/02/2021

It appears the cold snap is nearly over, with the wind having now moved away from the North East. Temperatures are on the rise, my forecast for next Sunday is a balmy 16C.

Let us hope the forecasters have it right. With the rise in temperatures, our spring bulbs will start growing again in earnest and we will be able to get out and enjoy our gardens. Dare I say, I am full of the joys of spring! I might even be able to cut the grass next weekend.
