Macduff Ship Design will be exhibiting at Seawork Southampton from 9th – 11th June 2026 at Stand E3.

Managing Director Ian Ellis will be present at the stand along with two of our Naval Architects Joe Watkins and Matt Stainsby. If you are attending the event, please stop by the stand to talk about our ongoing projects and how we can help deliver your next design.

Macduff Ship Design is proud to see two of our older designs, namely “HRINGUR” (Ex – “MARINA POLARIS”) and “ATLANTIC CHALLENGE” continuing to deliver exceptional performance to their owners.

The “ATLANTIC CHALLENGE” was sold to Namibia and has undergone modifications to make it suitable for the new owners.

The “HRINGUR” was previously sold to Iceland in 2005.

Macduff Ship Design are wishing sucess to the new owners of the vessels and hope to hear of many more years of safe and prosperous operation.

Since January Ian and Duncan have been attending Help to Grow: Management Course at Aberdeen Business School, RGU. The course covered 12 modules helping develop business management skills for leaders in small and medium sized enterprises. The course completed last week and we were pleased to receive certificates.

A key highlight was the discussions with other business leaders undertaking the course. These open conversations about experiences and challenges faced complimented the lectures perfectly.

Thanks to Aberdeen Business School, RGU and Small Business Charter for this opportunity.

Macduff Ship Design are pleased to announce that Rebecca Barnard - our senior marine surveyor - has joined the YDSA as a Coding Surveyor. This allows us to now work with both YDSA and SCMS to provide vessel coding services in both the commercial workboat and pleasure vessel sectors.

YDSA and SCMS are certifying authorities appointed by the MCA to undertake coding to Workboat Code Ed. 3 standard. If you haven't updated the edition 3 coding please get in touch to see how we can assist.

Macduff Ship Design are also able to undertake various other survey services including; Stability Assessment, Inclining Experiment, Lightship Test, Ultrasonic Thickness (UT) Testing, Valuation, Insurance Survey...

Throwback Thursday 🚢

Throwing it back to 2016, when Marsden Bay officially entered service at Northport, New Zealand.

Designed by Macduff Ship Design and built by Boustead Langkawi Shipyard, this 17m harbour tug was created specifically for North Tugz — based on the proven Sally McLoughlin, but scaled up and strengthened to meet demanding operational needs.

With a 28-tonne bollard pull, twin CAT C32 engines, and a deck fully equipped for towing, pushing, surveying, and lifting, Marsden Bay quickly proved herself a highly capable vessel in the small harbour tug class.

Classed under BV, built to Maritime New Zealand stability regulations, and designed for a two-person crew with overnight accommodation, she was engineered for performance, efficiency, and endurance from day one.

A great reminder of what thoughtful design and close collaboration can deliver.
