Onnu Biochar Manufacturing and providing UK made high quality biochar for retail and trade customers

We understand that net-zero can only be achieved if organisations can thrive while making the necessary changes to their operations. Pyrolysis is a remarkable technology which offers cheap renewable energy and carbon removal at the same time. We are passionate about our vision for as many organisations to benefit from this technology as possible, but understand that they will not all have the reso

urces to make the transition themselves while they focus on their core business challenges. At Onnu, we make it a hassle free decision to join a local circular economy, driving income and savings, at a time when they are needed most. Our mission is to launch 100 Green Energy Hubs in the next decade, delivering on what the world needs most - substantial and scalable carbon capture.

A new study shows that pairing biochar with lime tackles acidic soils and boosts productivity.

A three-year field study found that applying biochar and lime together increased peanut yields by up to 27% and farmer net income by 23% compared to lime alone.

The combination neutralized toxic aluminium, improved microbial activity by over 46%, and strengthened soil structure for long-term resilience.

Beyond yield improvements, the study also demonstrated a 53% reduction in future amendment requirements by the third year, proving that soil health, productivity, and profitability can go hand in hand when biochar is used strategically.

When it comes to implementing biochar at scale, success starts with the right trials and expert guidance.

As biochar is a highly variable material, its performance depends on factors such as feedstock, pH, and moisture content. Before committing to bulk purchasing, it’s essential to trial biochar for your specific use case to ensure optimal results.

Onnu Biochar’s Sustainability Consultants and Agronomists support partners across multiple sectors to identify the most effective biochar specifications for their needs.

Studies show that mixing 10–20% biochar by weight into arid or polluted soils can completely immobilise heavy metals and toxic organic compounds, preventing them from leaching into groundwater or entering the food chain.

This makes biochar a powerful tool for soil remediation, transforming contaminated land into safer, more productive environments.

A fascinating new study by the Asia-Pacific Journal of Chemical Engineering reveals that engineered biochar can remove up to 98% of dye pollutants from wastewater, offering a scalable, sustainable solution for one of industry’s biggest environmental challenges.

Made from agricultural waste like rice husks or coconut shells, biochar’s cleaning power increases dramatically when “activated”: a process that enhances its porosity and introduces functional chemical groups capable of binding and breaking down pollutants.

Key insights from the research:
🔹 Activation boosts efficiency: Acid, base, or steam treatments can expand surface area to 1000–3000 m²/g, significantly improving pollutant adsorption.

🔹 Water pH plays a key role: Alkaline water (pH 8–10) is optimal for removing cationic dyes such as methylene blue.

Biochar’s exceptional porosity and surface area make it a powerful tool for odour control, capturing and neutralising unpleasant compounds from agricultural, composting, and waste management operations.

When used in compost or applied over manure lagoons, biochar can significantly reduce ammonia and sulphur emissions, improving air quality and working environments. Beyond odour management, it also brings lasting environmental benefits through carbon sequestration.

A practical, natural solution for cleaner, more sustainable operations.

A recent discussion with Professor Colin Snape and Dr Tom Bott (University of Nottingham) sheds light on the growing body of research into how biochar can improve soil function, increase microbial diversity, and permanently lock away carbon.

Some of the key takeaways include:

➡️ Biochar is not one-size-fits-all: its performance depends on feedstock, soil type, and application method.

➡️ When applied correctly, it enhances soil structure, reduces erosion, and supports microbial life.

➡️ High-quality, high-temperature biochar can remain stable in soils for thousands of years.

➡️ The right regulatory and economic frameworks could unlock biochar’s full potential for UK agriculture and climate goals.

This research reinforces what many in the sector already know; that biochar is a foundational tool for sustainable land management and carbon sequestration.

💧 New research has uncovered a hidden superpower in biochar that could reshape clean water technology.

Until now, biochar was mainly recognised as a filter, capturing pollutants like a sponge. But scientists at Shenyang Agricultural University have shown it can actually destroy pollutants directly through electron transfer, responsible for up to 40% of its cleaning power.

This breakthrough could mean:

✅ Cleaner water with fewer added chemicals
✅ Lower costs for treatment plants
✅ A greener, more efficient way to tackle industrial pollution

Biochar is proving to be an active tool for global sustainability challenges.

A new study, led by the University of Nottingham’s Faculty of Engineering, has shown that converting food waste into biochar could lead to a reduction of 93,000 tonnes of CO₂ each year by 2030.

The report shows that converting food-waste digestate, a residue from biogas production, into biochar offers a low-cost, high-impact climate solution.

A recent survey published by The Guardian found that more than 80% of UK farmers report falling crop yields due to extreme weather this year.

Biochar offers a tool to fight this by improving soil health, increasing water and nutrient retention, enhancing soil microbial activity, and boosting plants' tolerance to abiotic stresses like drought, salinity, and extreme temperatures.

These benefits lead to more robust, resilient plants with a greater ability to survive challenging environmental conditions and reach their full growth potential.

🌳 How can biochar benefit trees here in the UK?

By improving soil structure, boosting nutrient availability, and enhancing water retention, biochar helps trees grow stronger and more resilient against stressors like drought and disease.

It also supports long-term carbon storage in woodlands and plantations, making trees healthier while contributing to wider sustainability goals.
