Ten years. Hundreds of homes. Thousands of decisions.
🧡 This year marks 10 years of Magda and me working together in residential architecture, helping homeowners transform traditional houses into homes that work for real life.
🏠 I used to worry about imposter syndrome. I used to wonder whether I was allowed to talk confidently about what we do. But I’m trying to shift that story now, because the truth is, we have a huge amount of experience in this sector.
🧱 We know how families use their homes. We know where the pinch points usually are. We know why the kitchen becomes the heart of the house, why storage matters, why light matters, why planning permission can be stressful, and why clients need clear, calm guidance from the first sketch through to building regulations drawings.

Good design has to be safe too.
🧱 Walking across Williamsburg Bridge in New York got me thinking about movement, structure, separation, safety and how design decisions affect people every day.
🏠 The best design makes things feel intuitive, clear and safe, often without you even noticing. On home extensions, safety is part of the process too.
🧡 Under CDM 2015 and the Building Safety Act, the Principal Designer role helps make sure health and safety is considered properly during design and construction. It might not be the glamorous bit of architecture, but it really matters.
🧱 When you are planning building work at home, there are duties, responsibilities and decisions that need to be thought through properly, not left until the last minute.

🧡 We’re so excited to finally share this…
Pride Road Architects are featured in the June edition of Your Home magazine with an incredible 11-page feature on our clients Rachel and Chris’s beautiful Victorian home on Crank Road in St Helens.
This project was all about creating a home that truly reflected them. Rich colours, vintage furniture, playful details, bold design choices and a light-filled kitchen extension that completely transformed how the family lives.
One of my favourite things about this feature is how personal the home feels. Nothing is overly polished or “show home”. Instead, it’s warm, creative, joyful and completely individual, exactly how family homes should be.
Rachel described our workshop process as helping them “think about solutions for the whole house, not just the extension”, and that’s exactly what we aim to do at Pride Road Architects. Good design is never just about adding square footage. It’s about improving how you live.

🧡 From pub to home… and a kitchen that changes everything.

Chris and Rachel’s home started life as a Victorian pub, full of character but with a kitchen that just didn’t work. It was dark, narrow, and completely disconnected from the rest of the house, making everyday life and family time more difficult than it needed to be.

🏠 Through our design workshop, we explored a range of options together. While a two-storey extension was considered, the real opportunity was in doing something smarter. A carefully designed single-storey extension, with high-level glazing, rooflights and a bifold window, completely transformed the space without overpowering the building.

🧱 The result is a light-filled, mid-century inspired kitchen that feels open, calm and connected to the surrounding woodland. It’s now the heart of the home. A place to cook, entertain and spend time together as a family.
As Rachel and Chris put it, “It’s like our home dream come true.”

🧡 This is Magda’s project, and what a gorgeous one it is.
🏠 We’ve finally submitted it for this year’s Manchester Society of Architects Awards. It’s a beautiful metal-clad extension in Didsbury, and it feels like a real moment for Pride Road Architects.
🧱 I’ve had serious imposter syndrome about entering these awards, but I’m so proud of the work we do as a practice, and this one absolutely deserves to be celebrated.
🧡 Huge thanks to everyone involved: photography by Phil Tragen, quantity surveying by Brenda Decker at Virtue Masteries, kitchen by Kemp, interior design by Lived In 365, structural engineering by BDI, and build by Roddick from Form Construction.

🧡 This kitchen had been part of the home for decades, but it no longer worked for how the family lived.

🏠 Rather than extending out into the garden, the decision was to extend sideways, keeping the footprint efficient while completely transforming the feeling of the space. The challenge was to bring in as much natural light as possible without taking light away from the existing dining room behind.

🧱 The solution was a fully glazed side extension with a very slim, low roof profile. That detail was key. It meant you can still sit in the dining room and see straight through to the garden, while the kitchen itself is flooded with light. The result is a space that feels open, calm and completely connected to the outside.

Over the years, we’ve found that it’s not always about doing more work across the whole house. Sometimes, focusing on one space and getting it absolutely right can completely change how a home feels and functions.

This project was built with great care and attention to detail by Rebecca Rowland from Oakfield Home Improvements, and it’s a brilliant example of what can be achieved with the right team in place.
