You’ve probably seen ads or had leaflets through your door for boiler & electric heating grants, but are these real and if they are how do they work?
This post will outline how these grants work and best way to go about getting them.
The ECO (Energy Company Obligation) scheme was established in Britain to reduce carbon emissions and tackle fuel poverty (Google search ‘ECO scheme’ to see all the official pages).
What this basically means is that the scheme was setup to reduce carbon emissions caused by poor inefficient heating from old boiler and electric storage heaters while also enabling people who can’t afford to upgrade their heating get access to funding.
The big energy companies have an obligation to hit targets that have been set out however the date by when this needs to be done keeps changing.
So how can you get these grants
The first thing to note is that the eligibility criteria can be very confusing.
Whether or not you can get your boiler or electric heating upgraded depends on your current heating type, the type or property you live in and your area.
One of the more debated criteria is whether or not you are on benefits. The good news is this is now about to change depending on your area.
As the process to qualify for a grant requires checks on your property by a surveyor, paperwork to be sent back and forth between installers and funding providers, the best way is to go through a company that specialises in arranging this for you.
Things to look out for when researching companies is to first confirm if you qualify without having to make any contributions. What this means is that the work needed to upgrade your heating won’t be fully covered by the grant therefore you would need to contribute some of your own money towards it. There is nothing wrong with this as the average contribution is around £300, which is nothing if you compare it to £1-2k that you would be saving on a new boiler or electric heating upgrade. However its worth applying with a few companies as some might be able to qualify you without any contributions.
Please keep in mind that even if you apply with a number of companies you might not qualify due to your current circumstances. But don’t worry, the ECO scheme is changing all the time, and with the current green home voucher scheme to come in September there may be some changes that will open up funding for you.
