Have you ever had the need to call a either for domestic or commercial? Did you do any checks on the locksmith you used their services? Did you feel safe and secure in their hands?
The majority of UK locksmiths are competent and provide a valued and professional service, however, at present anyone can set up and call themselves a locksmith in the UK even if they are not a trained locksmith.
Here we list few things that you should consider when looking for a locksmith to assist you.
Firstly does the locksmith have a landline number and a registered company address? Those that use just a mobile phone number should be avoided, even a landline can be set up to show a local number so it is well worth checking on the company you plan to use and make sure they truly are a legitimate business.
Is the locksmith local or are they part of what is known as a national. You will tend to pay less for a local locksmith and will find it easier to chase things up if you are not happy or have a complaint whereas a national will tend to be pricier, often extortionate and you really don't know who you are getting, they may advertise as local but you may end up with a locksmith from much further afield and someone you will find it hard to chase if it all goes wrong.
Do they give you a free estimate over the phone and a quote when on site? A trick of the dodgy locksmith is to arrive on site and make out that more work is involved as first thought which they then add to the cost. Before any work starts it is advisable to ask the locksmith for a quote, this is then binding and extras cannot be thrown on top unless they run it past you before doing work that they have not quoted for.
Do they try non destructive entry first before drilling a etc? We see this all the time where a door has just been shut behind with the keys in the house, this is a simple non destructive entry scenario in most cases and so a locksmith should have no need to destroy the lock or replace, if they say otherwise which often they do then you should avoid as this is a way they upsell you a new lock which wasn't needed and also add to their labour cost.
There are many more things to watch out for when using a locksmith in an unregulated UK market so next time you need one consider some of the points we have mentioned here or if you have a burning question contact Eclectic Security who would be happy to advise, we may also be able to recommend a decent trustworthy locksmith in your area.
