Who won Britain's Favourite Butterfly where you live? 📍🦋

The flashy Peacock may have taken the UK by storm, but it wasn't a unanimous victory.

The Orange-tip, which came in second overall, clung on to its stronghold in the north of England and Scotland. But the real surprise was the Comma, which came in third in Scotland. This species is a relative newcomer to the country, having expanded its range northwards in recent years.

The popular Holly Blue is another species that has made its way further north, coming in close second behind the Peacock in Northern Ireland.

In Norfolk, the rare and beautiful Swallowtail reigned supreme, while a sudden influx of Painted Ladies won the hearts of the people of Pembrokeshire.

Did your favourite butterfly make it onto the map?

📣 Local councils in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough are changing!

Our area is undergoing Local Government Reorganisation (LGR), the Government’s national programme to simplify how councils are structured in England.

It means from April 2028, the seven current county, district, city and unitary councils in our area will be replaced by a smaller number of new ‘unitary councils’ responsible for providing all the council services you access.

The Government is expected to announce which new councils will be created in July 2026.

Whatever the decision, existing councils are working together to make sure the transition is as smooth as possible and ensure your services continue as normal without disruption.

We’ll keep you updated as soon as we know more.

🔍 Species Spotlight: Emperor Dragonfly

One of the UK's largest and most spectacular dragonflies, the Emperor Dragonfly is hard to miss as it patrols ponds and lakes. Look for its apple-green thorax, sky-blue abdomen (in males) and powerful, fast flight, often rarely settling for long.

If you're spotting dragonflies during PondWatch weekend, don't forget to record your sightings on iRecord. Every record helps us build a better picture of dragonfly populations across the UK.

And there's more exciting news... the Emperor Dragonfly has been shortlisted as a potential design for the next UK banknotes! 💷✨ If you'd like to see this magnificent species in everyone's pocket, be sure to cast your vote.
