Some more new bits and bobs ready for the weekend.....

Not a bunch to sit around and do nothing, the growing team have been busy potting on hundreds more plants up in the nursery, while the retail boys and girls have been filling the beds with yet more deliveries from Holland.

A few new things of note, all looking top notch and waiting for a spot in your garden....

Two varieties of Lavatera, what our lovely mum calls 'Mallow'.... shrubby habit and thousands of flowers all Summer long. Choose from 'Burgundy Wine' if you like dark pink, while 'Barnsley Baby' is a much paler variety with a slightly more compact habit. Superb quality young plants, well branched, and a brilliant space filler.....they bulk up lovely and quick.

A new crop of Cupid's Dart, or Catananche, a stunning mixed border perennial which will produce hundreds of starry blue flowers, held on tall, wiry stems. It's so pretty. Once tried, you'll never be without it. Such a great common name as you'll definitely fall in love with this one! Young plants not yet in flower, but take a look at our display pot. It's amazing!

AT LAST.....our very own grown selection of 'Trixi' pots, lots of different recipes, all chosen to compliment each other perfectly. Now all out for sale in our rose area.

Echinacea 'Lakota Red', the first of the 'posh' Echinaceas. Vivid red flowers to come, they are just green at the moment.

A fresh crop of Cosmos 'Cherry Chocolate'.....it's taken a while to grow them on and they're now down for sale @ £6.50 each. If you've not been in recently, take a look at our display plant.... we've never seen another plant quite this shade of cherry-red. First 250 all gone...next 250 just ready.

Tradescantia 'Brainstorm' (deep purple), 'Pink Chablis' (pink/white) and 'Danielle' (pure white). A great group of plants called the 'Spiderworts', perfectly hardy and loves a little shade. And no exaggeration, they flower all Summer long.

Geranium 'Orkney Cherry', a super little hardy Geranium with chocolate leaves, atop which are held hundreds of pink flowers flushed white. Part of our Mix & Match range, these are great ground cover at the front of a sunny border.

The Himalayan Indigo, or Indigofera hetarantha, a wonderful shrub in the Pea family. Really cold Winters will make it behave more like a herbaceous plant, but give this one credit, it's pretty darn tough. We left our crop outside in what was a very wet Winter, it got soaked through and didn't dry out 'til March. Enough to kill many a Legume.....but these little guys just got on with it and they're looking amazing for this weekend. A friend of mine has some growing up trellises on a sheltered sunny wall and they drip from bottom to top with flowers every Summer, 6 or 7 feet tall and loving the sunny walls. It's a beauty! Or alternatively give it a ‘brave’ haircut every Spring, and expect it to reach 3-4 feet tall each year.

Not to mention, we're still keeping our SALE area stocked up daily with plants which, while not what we'd call Grade 1, are still healthy, and will go on to perform brilliantly in the garden...nearly always 50% off RRP or less. Tomorrow will see some Knautias, Euphorbias and Verbenas for £1 each, some Leucanthemum 'Crazy Daisy' for £4.00 and some hardy, tall Fuchsia called 'Ricartonii' also for £4.00 each.

It's Foxglove season.....
..and a cheeky few hours mountain biking yesterday in Cannock Chase, was blessed with the most spectacular sight of them that clothed the open fields with thousands of spikes of purple....

Now just by chance (honest), we've been growing a crop of super-duper Foxgloves here since March, and over the last 10 days, they're all erupting into magnificent flower spikes in a whole host of colours.

Archie was topping them up earlier after and you'll see in the pic, just how enormous they are. A minimum of three huge spikes per plant, but more often than not there'll be more.

We have 'Dalmatian' Foxgloves (spotted) in white, purple and rose, not to mention the amazing multi-flowering 'Panther'...all enormous, all coming into their own, and all £15 each.

And in smaller pots we also have some lovely new varieties called 'Hannabee' in two colours, rose and white. Not to mention another old favourite, 'Arctic Fox Rose', not quite in flower yet....all of these are part of our Mix & Match range.

If you've been over the last few days, you may have spotted these XXL plants already; we have some in our rose area, and some in our pergola. If you haven't, and if you fancy a bit of an instant Chelsea makeover, be sure to pay us a visit soon x

Now Foxgloves adore a little partial shade, but as you'll see from yesterdays jaunt into the Staffordshire hills, they're equally happy in an open, sunny spot too. Just make sure you give them a good drink to settle in once planted, and whatever you do, ALWAYS make sure they're nice and well watered before they go into the ground.

Split Compost Bags & Hessian Sacks

From time to time we accumulate a number of split compost bags, which we will be selling off tomorrow morning at 9am !

Lots of different composts all at half their normal price, but this is strictly a first come first served offer – no orders being taken & no delivery option – just pop down and grab whatever you want.

Last time we did this, all the bags were gone in an hour !

We also have around 50 used hessian coffee bean sacks – our stoneware suppliers use them to pack goods so they don’t get damaged in transit. They are free to whoever wants them, but again it’s a “pop down and grab them” offer ! In this world of upcycling that we live in, there’s bound to be lots of uses for them – they make a brilliant liner for pond plants, but I’m sure there’s a hundred other uses !

Both the split bags and hessian sacks are in the car park x

Archie, Caron and Andy will be on hand to answer your plant queries, Rachel and team will be there to give you a friendly welcome at the tills....while Tressa, Kelly and I continue making sure the plants we're growing are well looked after in the nursery.

Don't forget, this morning morning we'll be offering our FREE Cup and Saucer vine seedlings to you all tomorrow, as part of a competition you're all welcome to enter. See previous post. £100 voucher top prize up for grabs. Get those green fingers ready.....

For a free plant, please ask at the tills. In an effort to make sure as many people get a plant as possible, they'll be issued one-per-customer by our lovely till team....so please ask in the shop.

And there's tons more new plants arrived this week too, not to mention some stunners we've grown here, just waiting for that little corner in your very own garden.

Have a great weekend x

A CRACKING PLANTING DUO.....

We're always trying new things here, always looking for something new and different, the plants that the huge Garden Centres haven't got their corporate hands on yet...

So we've had a punt at a brand new version of Salvia 'Amistad', this time instead of being indigo violet, it's pink.

And in time honoured Ronseal tradition*, they've called it.....yep.....

'Pink Amistad'

Now we've yet to see a flower on it, it's that new to us. But we can report that it's growing beautifully, nice and strong, and we'll have some down for sale from our nursery tomorrow. It's such a new variety, our supplier hasn't even got colour labels printed for it yet.
But take a look at the photos and you'll see just how pretty it's going to be when it flowers.

So what to plant it with?

Well, if you're planting in the garden, why not give it a nice backdrop of dark foliage, and we've got the perfect shrub in Sambucus 'Black Lace'. Finely divided black leaves, it almost looks like a Japanese Maple. But it'll tolerate heavy soil, cold, wind, sun and exposure.....where Maples won't. Tough as nails, because it's an Elderberry.

And as long as you plant your Salvia on the sunny side of the Sambucus, you won't go wrong.

Or if you're going to grow it in a pot? We've got a lovely dark leaved foliage plant called Ipomoea 'Black Tone', sumptuous heart shaped leaves of deepest purple, they'll soften the side of any planter, giving a lovely contrast of colour, while letting the flowers of 'Pink Amistad' do all the attention-grabbing.

Fancy a try? Well, 'Pink Amistad' joins our Mix & Match range of plants tomorrow....£8.00 each, or £6.50 if you have a mix of 3 or more.

Those internet plant sellers Crocus have got this very same plant on sale, in the very same pot size, for a WHOPPING £17.99...the price of buying online, just because it's a new variety?

Sambucus 'Black Lace', a super duper shrub in a 3L pot, they're on sale @ £12.50. Take a look at the stupendous specimen in our display garden, it's just coming into flower and looks extraordinary.

And Ipomoea 'Black Tone' comes down from our nursery tomorrow as part of our '3 for £10' range.

Decisions, decisions.....but for a display full of gothic drama, and contrasting colours to make your pinks pop, look no further.

*you'll get this if you're of a certain age

A Fuchsia that CLIMBS?

Well, no, not exactly, but there is a Fuchsia that's known widely as 'The Climbing Fuchsia', becuase it'll clothe a fence or wall in no time at all.

It's called 'Lady Boothby', and it sure is a real sight to see in flower. Classed as a hardy type, it'll rocket up when the weather warms up, and easily reach 5-6 feet tall in a single season. And like all Fuchsias, it'll be smothered in flowers all season long.

Dead easy in a large pot, bt all you'll need to do is tie the long shoots into a suport, to keep it nice and tidy.

Because much as it's known as a 'climber', it isn't. It's a tall shrub, with no means of supporting itself with tendrils (like a Passion Flower), sticky roots (like an ivy), sucker pads (like a Virginia Creeper) or twisty stems (like a Honeysuckle or Wisteria).

Give it help with the occasional bit of string as it climbs, and it'll amaze you with it's growth rate and number of flowers. But if you don't tie it in, it'll look a little wyward and straggly.

So, from today we'll have these down in our beddng plant tunnel. They're in a 10.5cm pot, so they'll be alongside our othr Fuchias in there, and they'll be exactly the same price.

Yep, just £2.50.

Now, talking of tendrils.....another plant ready soon, and this one DOES use tendrils. It's called the Cup & Saucer Vine, and this one really does romp away. We're always looking to give you plants that extend the season, and this little beauty won't even think about flowering until maybe August .....and will give you a spectacular late Summer display.

For this one, you'll need a little preparation. So we're giving you a heads up, a wek or so before it's ready.

What we mean is, you must give it room to grow, 'cos it grows FAST. With tall, reaching stems covered in tendrils, the moment it gets a grasp on a trellis, netting, or bamboo canes, it's not gonna let go.

A one year only climber hailing from Mexico, it need full sun, a sheltered spot, away from cold winds. And given the right spot, it'll grow a MINIMUM of 10 feet tall, often way more.

With hundreds of flowers throughout the late Summer, if you've never grown it before, well prepare to be amazed.

What's also amazing? It's FREE.

Yep, you heard right. We have around 150 of these growing here, and they'll be brought down Saturday morning and offered free of charge....under one condition.

We want photos of your Cup & Saucer Vine, in all it's glory, later in the year, and there'll be Plant Man vouchers for the best 3 greenfingered growers. A top prize of £100 in vouchers, second prize of £50 and third prize of £25.

Send your photos in by the end of October, to [email protected], and Gary will decide who's nailed it. Now we're getting more and more pictures generated by AI, getting harder and harder to spot, so you'll have to include yourself in the photo too !

Hence the preparation....you have a few days to give it some thought.

A sunny wall or fence
A trellis, lots of netting, or at a push, lots of bamboo canes.
A good sized pot to grow it in if you're not putting it in the ground...mark my words, if you put it in a pot that's too small, then decide to pot it one once it's started climbing, you'll struggle.

Good quality compost, maybe a liquid feed once a week if you're really serious and competitive, and well, just wait and see what happens. We recommend our multi + JI or our Emerald Gold composts for the best results. Peat free will also work, but if you're competitive, it may not give you quite the biggest plants (although we'd love to be proved wrong!)

Interested? Saturday morning 9am, we'll bring our seedlings down to the car park, and you can help yourself. STRICTLY one pot per customer, we want as many people to try this and we only have a very limited number of plants. Please don't take any for friends and family otherwise, there won't be enough to go around. Sorry we can't take requests by phone/email either...

So there you are...two more reasons for visiting us again very soon. Another blindingly hot day today, keep safe and water your plants early today!
