There's a misconception in workplace design that we come across more than we'd like. The idea that aesthetics and function are a trade-off. That you can have a beautiful office or a practical one, but not both.

It's not true, but it does lead to some poor decisions.

Here's what actually happens when the two get separated ...

When function is an afterthought, people stop using certain spaces. Meeting rooms that looked great on a plan don't quite work for how teams actually work together. The vision you started with slowly gets eroded.

When aesthetics are skipped in favour of pure practicality, you get a space that works on paper but creates no emotional connection. In a hybrid world where people have real choice about where they work, that matters more than many businesses realise.

The strongest offices treat aesthetics and function as the same conversation, not competing priorities. Material choices affect acoustics as well as appearance. Layout influences how people move and interact, not just how the floorplan looks.

We've written about this in more detail on our website, including where projects tend to go wrong and what a better approach looks like.

Worth a read if you're thinking about a redesign or relocation:

A fantastic day at Clerkenwell Design Week last week for Alex Ryan and Kaz Wedrychowski.

Clerkenwell Design Week is an industry extravaganza that takes place every May. It's always a brilliant opportunity to catch up with suppliers, find out what they're up to and what they've got coming up.

Nothing beats face-to-face conversations and as you can see, the area was full of design professionals - with many of them enjoying the sunshine at The Slaughtered Lamb!

Our team always come away buzzing with ideas and inspiration for what we can offer our clients, as well as a great feeling about how vibrant and exciting the design community is.

Alex and Kaz loved seeing Elite Office Furniture's new range and catching up with Mark Johnson. Also good to see our friends at Milliken & Company, Camira and enjoy a breakfast stop at Amtico's showroom.

And a special mention to the gorgeous puppies at Umbrella Furniture.

Well done to the organisers and everyone that took part - another fantastic event showcasing the immense design talent in our industry.

We talk a lot about our bigger projects on here but did you know that we also have a small works team?

This part of our business focuses on delivering projects with tighter budgets. These are also jobs that often need quicker turnarounds too.

Projects like reconfiguring a space that’s no longer working, adding a few more desks without it feeling cramped or upgrading a breakout area.

Not every project needs to be a full redesign to make a difference. In lots of cases, a few well thought through changes can have a real impact on how a space functions.

Our small works team was set up to help with practical, straightforward improvements that make your workplace work better.

If you’ve got something that’s been niggling in your office for a while, chances are we can help.

After a change in leadership, Jaggard Macland LLP wanted to mark the occasion with an office refresh. They didn’t need a full refurbishment, but wanted their office to feel more modern, more comfortable, and to work better for the team.

A refresh, rather than a redesign, within a sensible budget.

We introduced new furniture, added some colour, and made a series of small changes to how the space is used. The kind of tweaks that make a difference straight away. The result is a space that feels more inviting and functions more smoothly day to day.

It’s a good example of what can be achieved without starting from scratch.

Our small works team focuses on exactly this type of project. Helping businesses make meaningful improvements to their workspace, without the need for a full overhaul.

If your office isn’t quite working as well as it should, it might not take as much as you think to fix it.

One thing that stood out for us from JLL’s latest Global Office Fit-Out Costs Guide is the continued pressure on costs across the market.

Fit-out costs haven’t settled in the way many hoped and that’s having a knock-on effect on decision making. We’re seeing it in conversations we're having with businesses waiting to see what happens next.

It while it's true that costs are a challenge, the demand for better quality workplaces hasn’t gone away. If anything, expectations around design and performance are getting higher, which creates some tension.

Wait and you risk losing momentum, move forward, and you need to be clear on where you’re investing and why.

The projects that tend to run best are the ones with a clear plan from the outset.

If you’re weighing up your next move, the report is well worth a read:

Most office designs start with a plan:

✔️ Desks
✔️ Meeting rooms
✔️ Ratios
✔️ Capacity

But if you really want to understand how a workplace is performing, start with what people actually do, rather than the floorplan.

❓ Where do they naturally gather?
❓ Where do conversations happen without being scheduled?
❓ Where does work actually move forward?

It’s often the informal moments that drive collaboration, like the quick chat waiting for the kettle to boil.

And yet, these are the spaces that are easiest to overlook when designing an office.

Our latest blog looks at what designing for how people actually work really looks like, and why it matters.

Education has been a big part of our work for a long time. Schools, colleges, universities. In all of these environments the space has to work flexibly.

A classroom needs to work for a lecture at 9am and group work by 10. Dining spaces double as social hubs. Libraries have to support silence and collaboration, often in the same room. And all of it on budgets that don't have much room for error.

It's taught us to think differently about how spaces actually get used, rather than just how they look on a plan.

What's interesting is how much this mindset has started crossing over into workplace design. People expect the same things from their office now. The option to focus, to collaborate, to move around. Choice, basically.

If you're refreshing an education space or you're curious how this kind of thinking could work in your office, it's an area we know really well. We're always happy to chat.

83% to 95%. That’s the shift in one of our client’s employee survey results after their recent office refurb we completed for them.

The statement being measured:
“Our facilities contribute to a good working environment.”

We talk a lot about design, layout and finishes, but ultimately it comes down to whether the space actually works for the people using it every day.

It's great to see such a clear jump in satisfaction.

Can we help improve your team's experience of the office?
