Sketch development for a Marple kitchen extension.

Creating a space that would become the hub of the home and open up to the garden.

Different options exploring the level difference between existing home and garden. (Where to put the steps?)

While also maximizing the use that can fit into a newly created utility room / wc / shower.

Inspiration images also from Will Gamble Architects.

Planning approval received this week for this family home in Marple. Reworking the ground floor into a layout better suited to modern family living. Also creating an additional home work office upstairs by rearranging the rear roofscape. Cladding changes to update the outside appearance.

Submitted in February this year, great to finally get planning for some good friends in Crewe this week (30+ weeks later).

Complex discussions with the local authority about several issues were able to be resolved as we tested a number of possibilities to gauge their opinions. Happily the planners agreed that increasing the set back of the front elevation and changing the extension roof to a hip resolved their concerns about impact on neighbouring amenity.

After waiting such a long time without a decision my clients had even started to look for a new 4bed home nearby, with little success.

I may have got something in my eye when the news of this one came in, as I knew it meant so much to some of our best friends.

Earlier this year it was wonderful to be able to visit a local Marple family in the joy of recently moving house and exploring the potential goodness of what could be.

A two phase design that went through options for kitchen / diner extension at the rear while also investigating garage conversion into home office for two that could also convert into guest room when the grandparents come to stay.

Detailed measurements (and old drawings from previous owners) helped understand the history of the home and its previous additions.

Planning approved!

This application in Macclesfield was submitted in November last year, but due to delays in the planning process only received approval this week (39 weeks later). Happily the clients don’t have to push their preferred builders back any more and can now crack on with the work. So glad to get this one over the line for a lovely family.

Looking back to St John’s CofE Primary School in Blackpool and the excellent photos taken by Dan Hopkinson as he’s currently got a brilliant exhibition on at the modernist in the Northern Quarter.

This is an award winning school I designed while working for Aedas (now AHR) that completed in 2008.

It is an innovative three storey new-build school situated in the heart of Blackpool town centre. The unique £3.9m project created 1,500m² includes a 16 place early years unit, facilities for community use and a 1FE primary school. It’s unusual height and design works with the tight urban context maximising both space and light whilst providing a secure and safe environment for staff and pupils to enjoy.
