Holmes Tree Services are looking for an experienced Climbing Arborist to join our network of subcontractors.

We’re a growing, family-run tree surgery business covering Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, Bedfordshire & Northamptonshire, and we’re keen to build relationships with reliable, skilled climbers who are available for ad-hoc subcontract days.

Requirements:
✔ Relevant climbing qualifications (NPTC/Lantra)
✔ Proven experience in arboriculture
✔ Full UK driving licence
✔ Strong work ethic and positive attitude
✔ Ability to work safely and as part of a team

What we're looking for:

🌿 Flexible availability
🌿 Competitive day rates based on experience

🌳☀️ How is the recent hot weather affecting our trees? ☀️🌳

With the prolonged periods of high temperatures and dry conditions we're currently experiencing, many trees are coming under increased stress.

One of the most common issues during hot weather is Summer Branch Drop – where large, healthy-looking limbs can suddenly fail without warning, even on otherwise healthy trees. This is most commonly seen in species such as oak, beech, willow and poplar, and can pose a significant risk where trees overhang roads, footpaths, gardens and buildings.

The weather can also have a lasting impact once the rain returns. After extended dry periods, heavy rainfall can rapidly saturate the soil, reducing root stability in already stressed trees and increasing the likelihood of branch or whole tree failure, particularly where decay or structural defects are present.

Signs to look out for include:
🌳 Dead or dying branches
🍂 Premature leaf drop or leaf scorch
🍄 Fungal growth around the base or stem
🌿 Cracks, splits or cavities
⚠️ Leaning trees or exposed roots following heavy rain

Regular tree inspections help identify potential issues before they become a safety concern. If you're responsible for trees on a commercial site, school, parish, or even in your own garden, it's worth having them assessed by a qualified arboriculturist or tree surveyor, particularly following periods of extreme weather.

Stump grinding works captured and created by our 11 year old 💥🪵

Earlier in the week we completed this stump grinding job, we even put our son to work by getting him behind the camera to film the action ! 🎥😁

Being a family business means everyone gets involved in one way or another, and it's lovely to see him taking an interest in what we do (don't worry, he wasn't operating the machinery! 😉)

Safe to say he did a great job of taking pictures and creating this video!

Another productive day, another happy customer, and some seriously satisfying stump grinding. 🌳💚
