Today saw the Holmes Tree Services team working alongside GLM on a vegetation clearance project, preparing the route for a gas company to install new underground gas pipes.

Our role involved:
🌳 Removing selected trees
βœ‚οΈ Cutting back overhanging branches
🌿 Clearing vegetation back to the site boundary

Once complete, GLM's impressive Green Climber followed behind, tackling dense vegetation, brambles, and ground cover to open up the route ready for the next phase of works.

Protecting the environment was a key priority throughout the project. We worked closely with an ecologist who surveyed the site beforehand, ensuring any ecological constraints were identified and that wildlife and habitats were protected during the works. πŸ¦πŸ€πŸ‡πŸΏπŸ¦”πŸ¦‡πŸ¦‘πŸ¦†

A great example of contractors and specialists working together to deliver a project safely, efficiently, and responsibly. πŸ‘

Despite the weather doing its best to slow us down πŸŒ§οΈπŸ’¨, the team still managed to squeeze plenty in last week.

From a monster conifer hedge reduction, huge willow pollards, an ash tree cutback and cherry tree removal, to crown lifts, conifer removals, deadwooding works and an emergency limb removal, it's certainly been a varied week.

We've also been back working for a number of returning customers, which is always something we're grateful for. It means a lot when people continue to trust us with their trees and gardens year after year.

Back to it tomorrow after a well earned rest!

Biodiversity at its finest πŸ‘Œ

πŸ„β€πŸŸ« Fungi begin breaking down the wood.

πŸͺ± Invertebrates such as beetles, woodlice, millipedes, and worms move in.

🐦 Birds (such as woodpeckers) feed on the insects.

🦎 Amphibians and reptiles may use the decaying wood for shelter and hunting.

🌱 Mosses, lichens, and plants colonise the decomposing material.

🌿 Eventually the nutrients return to the soil and support further plant growth.

In arboriculture and ecology, retaining suitable deadwood where it is safe to do so is often considered a valuable biodiversity enhancement measure. Deadwood is one of the most important habitats in many woodland ecosystems.

This is why, where safe and appropriate, we sometimes recommend retaining deadwood or timber from removed trees as habitat piles or wildlife features rather than removing everything from site.

Nature has an incredible way of recycling its own resources. πŸƒ

Have you got a habitat pile or wildlife corner in your garden?

You almost cleared it away. Thirty species are using it now. 🌿

A fallen branch in the garden is not debris. It is a building under construction, and the schedule is already set.

Month 1 β€” it falls. You plan to move it.

Year 1 β€” fungi colonise the wood, breaking down lignin and cellulose. The branch softens from the inside.

Year 3 β€” beetle larvae tunnel through the softened wood. Great spotted woodpeckers work along the surface, extracting the larvae. Each excavation aerates the log further.

Year 5 β€” smooth newts move in. They hunt mites, woodlice, and small invertebrates in the rotting chambers. The log is now a warm, humid, food-rich habitat.

Year 10 β€” the branch is gone. What remains is soil, returned to the tree it fell from.

Over its lifetime, a single fallen branch supports more than 30 species. Fungi, beetles, woodpeckers, newts, mosses, ferns, and the soil organisms that finish the job.

A fallen branch isn't debris. It's a building under construction 🌱

πŸŒ³β˜€οΈ Another week done and dusted! β˜€οΈπŸŒ³

It's been another busy week for the team!

We dealt with an emergency call-out to remove a snapped branch hanging over a public footpath and roadway, carried out a few tree cutbacks, completed several tree removals, and squeezed in a couple of hedge tidy-ups too.

The best part? We were back working for three returning customers this week. It's always nice to see familiar faces and know people trust us enough to keep calling us back.

🌳 Delicate Works on a Significant TPO Oak Tree 🌳

This week the team undertook carefully planned works on a large Oak tree protected by a Tree Preservation Order (TPO) β€” a tree of significant value to both the local landscape and community.

Mature Oaks like this are far more than just trees. They provide irreplaceable habitat, support a wide range of wildlife, and often hold historical and sentimental importance that cannot be replaced once lost.

Following a detailed inspection, historic Ganoderma brackets were evident at the base of the tree, along with an old occluding wound on the main stem and a cavity opening at the top of the wound.

Given the tree's high amenity value, the objective was not removal, but careful risk management and retention. The team carried out selective works to reduce risk while preserving the tree's ecological and landscape benefits for future generations.

The operation involved both a climbing arborist and a MEWP operator working within the canopy simultaneously, allowing works to be completed safely and efficiently while maintaining precise control over the removal of larger deadwood and defective material.

🌿 As always, a thorough wildlife inspection was completed prior to works commencing.

To further benefit the local environment:
βœ”οΈ Woodchip was retained on site to improve soil health and support invertebrates and fungi.
βœ”οΈ Timber was stacked neatly to create habitat piles, providing shelter and foraging opportunities for a variety of species.

This project is a great example of modern arboriculture β€” balancing public safety, tree preservation, biodiversity, and community value to ensure these remarkable trees can continue to be enjoyed for many years to come. πŸŒ³πŸ’š

The team utilised our RA21 MEWP to carry out the works safely, efficiently, and with minimal disruption.
Using the right equipment not only improves efficiency on site, but also allows us to complete works with greater precision and safety β€” particularly in built-up areas.

To top the day off, the team received some lovely feedback from the customer, which always makes the hard work worthwhile. 🌿😊

🌳 A Productive Day Across Milton Keynes 🌳

Today the team carried out a variety of works for a new client across Milton Keynes, including:

βœ”οΈ Cutbacks
βœ”οΈ Crown lifts
βœ”οΈ Obstruction clearances
βœ”οΈ Minor tree removals
βœ”οΈ Ivy severing
βœ”οΈ Removal of old stakes and ties from young trees

Working within urban environments always requires extra care and awareness, especially around:
🏑 Residential properties
πŸ’‘ Streetlights and utilities
πŸš— Parked vehicles
🚢 Public access and safety

As with all of our works, thorough environmental checks were completed prior to starting, with particular attention given to nesting birds and surrounding wildlife to ensure works were carried out responsibly and in line with best practice. 🌿🐦

Removing old stakes and ties from young trees is also an important part of tree aftercare, helping prevent restriction, poor growth, and long-term damage as the tree matures.

Another great day delivering safe, efficient, and environmentally conscious tree management for a new client πŸ’ͺ🌳

15/05/2026

The start of the week saw us working in collaboration with Glendale, GLM, and Ringway to carry out essential tree works along the highway network.

The works included the clearance of dead and diseased Oak, Ash, and Elm trees, along with crown lifting vaipus tree to 6 metres above the roadway to maintain safe clearance for passing vehicles and highway users.

To complete the works safely and efficiently, equipment on site included:
βœ”οΈ 21m MEWP
βœ”οΈ Digger
βœ”οΈ Whole tree chipper
βœ”οΈ Timber trailer

🌿 Why are these works important?
Proactive tree management along roadsides and public spaces helps to:
β€’ Reduce the risk of falling limbs or tree failure
β€’ Maintain safe clearance for vehicles and pedestrians
β€’ Improve visibility and access
β€’ Manage diseased and declining trees before they become hazardous

🚧 Why are road and footpath closures necessary?
Closures are essential to protect both the public and the workforce during high-risk operations involving heavy machinery, overhead cutting, and controlled dismantling. They allow the team to work safely while minimising the risk from falling debris, moving equipment, and traffic interaction.

Another large-scale project safely completed through strong teamwork and coordination between all involved. πŸ’ͺ🌳
