This access apron at a gas relay station near Chelmsford was all hand work for main contractor PP Construction Ltd — 100mm of heavy-duty AC20 binder under a 10mm SMA surface course, barrowed in, raked to level and rolled while it was hot. The best time to relay a school's courts is when nobody's there to use them. Four days on site during the summer break — two of prep, then a 6mm SMA surface machine-laid over tack coat, access covers re-bedded flush so there's nothing to catch a ball or a toe.

Not every surfacing contractor is allowed to work on the public highway. Dropped kerbs, footway crossings, kerb and pavement alterations — anything that touches council-owned road needs a licensed contractor, approval from the local authority, and work done to their standards.
