🏴󠁧󠁒󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿⚽ Good luck to Scotland in their opening World Cup match against Haiti in Boston! ⚽🏴󠁧󠁒󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

While none of the Crawford Architecture team managed to make it across the Atlantic for the World Cup, we thought we’d share this throwback to the Euros 2024 in Munich, where David, Kevin and John joined long-standing client and friend Robert to cheer on the Tartan Army. πŸ»πŸ‡©πŸ‡ͺ

Scotland always knows how to bring the atmosphere, and we’re hoping for the perfect start to the campaign tonight. πŸ™Œ

β˜€οΈBack from the Cyclades... and feeling inspired.β˜€οΈ

Over the past couple of weeks, David has been exploring the beautiful Greek islands of Milos, Paros, Naxos and Mykonos.

As an designer, it’s impossible not to admire how effortlessly the built environment works with the landscape. Whitewashed walls, shaded courtyards, narrow streets and simple forms - all designed with purpose and perfectly suited to their surroundings.

One of the biggest benefits of taking time away is gaining fresh perspective. Some of the best design inspiration comes when you step away from the drawing board and experience great places firsthand.

Now it's time to bring some of that inspiration back to Scotland and into the projects we're working on. ✏️🏑

πŸŽ‰ Congratulations to our Director, David Paton, on being recognised with the Board Member of the Year Award at the Voluntary Action Angus Heart of the Community Awards! πŸ†

This award is a fantastic and well-deserved recognition of David's passion, commitment and leadership in helping drive the regeneration of Montrose through his work with ProMo.

At Crawford Architecture, we see first-hand the time, energy and dedication that David and the wider ProMo team invest in creating a stronger future for our town. Their vision extends far beyond individual projects, focusing on building a more vibrant, resilient and sustainable town centre that can thrive for generations to come. 🌟

We are incredibly proud to support ProMo's work and have been delighted to contribute to a number of initiatives, including providing pro bono professional services, developing shopfront improvement and replacement designs, and assisting with the design proposals for the exciting new Hume Street development, which includes a 10-pin bowling and family entertainment facility alongside much-needed social housing. 🎳🏘️

The positive changes already being seen across Montrose are a testament to what can be achieved when community organisations, local businesses, volunteers and public sector partners work together towards a shared goal. 🀝

Congratulations once again, David, and thank you to everyone involved in ProMo for the incredible work you are doing to help shape the future of Montrose. πŸ’™

Cameron and Kat were back on site a couple of weeks ago with the client and consultant team to review the final details ahead of tender prices being finalised for this exciting upcoming project.

These meetings are a key stage in the process, making sure everything is coordinated before moving forward to the next phase. Great discussions all round, and exciting to see the project continuing to take shape.

Projects in more secluded rural locations always bring something special, and it’s hard not to appreciate views like these while on site. One of the best parts of the job is getting to work in places that make you stop for a moment and take it all in.

🌍 World Environment Day

One of the biggest complaints we hear from property owners?

"My building costs a fortune to heat."

Images like this thermal scan help illustrate the issue. The brighter areas show where heat is escaping from a building, highlighting how energy can be lost through the building fabric if performance isn't considered from the outset.

Whether it's a home, office, farm building or commercial property, rising energy costs are often a symptom of poor building performance rather than the heating system itself.

Good design can help:
βœ… Reduce energy consumption
βœ… Improve comfort
βœ… Lower running costs
βœ… Future-proof your property

The cheapest energy is the energy you never need to use.

Some projects are all about the setting β€” and this one is hard to beat.

These bespoke lodges on the Orkney Islands are now nearing completion, sitting in a beautifully secluded coastal location with uninterrupted views across the water.

Designed to feel grounded within the landscape, the lodges combine clean contemporary forms with robust, high-spec materials chosen to withstand the coastal environment while creating a warm, refined finish throughout. Externally, the striking charred timber cladding gives the buildings a bold but natural presence against the rugged surroundings.

Inside, the focus has been on quality, comfort and connection to the landscape β€” with carefully positioned glazing framing the incredible views from every angle.

A project that proves remote architecture can still feel luxurious, understated and deeply connected to place.

πŸ‘€πŸŒΏ A few years ago, we were involved in the planning, design and structure of these geodesic dome growing spaces in the Orkney Isles.

Set within a stunning coastal bay, the brief was simple:
πŸ‘‰ Grow food locally
πŸ‘‰ Reduce reliance on the mainland
πŸ‘‰ Create something that works with the landscape

The result? Timber and glass domes that are as striking as they are practical 🌱

Now, a couple of years on…
They’ve completely come to life β€” full of growth, colour and purpose πŸŒΌπŸƒ

The layout includes:
β€’ A cluster of 3 connected domes
β€’ A second unit of 2 linked domes

A great example of design supporting sustainability β€” and looking incredible while doing it.

Not every bid moves forward β€” but every one moves you forward.

We recently received the outcome of our submission for the V&A Dundee project and, while we weren’t shortlisted for Stage 2, we’re incredibly proud of the work our team produced.

This was a project we cared deeply about. Our approach was built around collaborating with a team of local professionals who are genuinely invested in Dundee, its culture and its future. That local insight and shared ambition shaped a submission we believe was thoughtful, ambitious and grounded in how people experience the space.

Bids like this take a huge collective effort, and I want to thank everyone involved for the energy, ideas and commitment that went into it.

Congratulations and best of luck to the teams progressing to the next stage β€” we’re looking forward to seeing how the project develops and the positive impact it will have on V&A Dundee.
