Cresswell Pele Tower

Cresswell Pele Tower This is a community page designed to share the progress of the restoration work of Cresswell Pele Tower.

Cresswell Pele Tower was built by the Cresswell family in the 15th century and is one of about 80 pele towers in Northumberland. We are currently surveying of the site using Geophysics and will be carrying out field walking in the next week or two.

Another fabulous opportunity for locals.

Massive thanks to all our buskers and to the audience yesterday.

A breezy day but well worth while!

Food rationing in the UK ended entirely on July 4, 1954, when restrictions on meat and bacon were finally lifted. Although World War II ended in 1945, severe shortages caused rationing to continue for nearly a decade.

As we prepare for our WW2 event in September, we are looking for memories people have of rationing. What do you remember as a child? What stories did your parents or grandparents tell you? Do you have any recipes or recipe books you could share with us?

Please leave your memories or stories in the comments.

Thursday morning in the garden

Even in the rain we enjoyed some bird ID at the break time and did yet more weeding! The specialist areas such as the Dyer’s Garden are developing well with some of the planting already filling their sections of the bed. It’s a great feature of gardens that the plants queue up to bloom and the seven here from the Dyer’s Garden are all still yet to show their colours. In the meantime they are deepening their greens in the rain! In order they are Yarrow, Lavender, Rue, Weld, Dyers Chamomile, Cornflower, Hyssop

Thursday morning in the garden

Enabling work today - more path weeding, prep of plants that are becoming ready for sale as we hit higher summer demand and a tidying / clearing of the brick lined path. We have a person with us on work experience (another important occasional role we have) who will be photographing / recording the origin companies of our heritage bricks.
In the garden we have lots of pollinators and also some wildlife at earlier stages - see photo of the mullein moth caterpillars on a verbascum plant! It’s a good time for poppies (and bees) and we also have a first flowering of a new rose, the golden gate. The delphiniums demonstrate well why the walls need to be so tall!

The Pele Tower is not scheduled to open this Sunday, 31st May, to give our helpers a short break but the garden remains open 10 to 5.
