🧑🏼‍🌾We’re getting a head start on our Early potato harvest by chitting our seed potatoes. It’s basically encouraging sprouts before planting out in March/April. This year we’re growing Nicola and Rocket, both are disease resistant and reliable croppers. Many garden centres will have seed potatoes in stock from mid-January. 🥔🌱

🧅Sowing onion seed is a great way to start your gardening year. Onions raised from seed tend to grow larger than those grown from sets, and it’s an economical way to get some homegrown veggies!🧅 gardening

Sir Harold Hillier Gardens has an inspirational winter garden with lots of ideas for shrubs, grasses and trees that look their best in winter. Many provide berries and flowers for winter wildlife - here are some that look their best in January.

🌷There’s still time to plant tulips - December’s not too late as long as the ground is soft. Many tulips stop flowering after the first year, so we’ve found some varieties that are more likely repeat flower, better for the environment and pollinators! This year we’re planting ‘Apricot Emperor’, ‘Mystik van Eijk, ‘Request’ ‘Viruchic’ and ‘Queen of Night’🌷

Broad Beans can be used as a green manure and the hardy variety, Aquadulce, can be sown in Winter. So even if you’re not keen on them as a vegetable it’s worth sowing a packet now as they add nitrogen to the soil and preventing valuable nutrients being lost.

Wood Pigeons love to eat Brassicas, so if you have any growing on your plot, now’s a good time to net them. We made a simple frame using Hazel poles, and tied on netting using garden twine. Sadly, we forgot about our Brussels Sprouts but hopefully we’ll have a few left for Christmas dinner…

Digging up Dahlia tubers is a great way to ensure they survive the Winter, ready for planting next Spring. We have some large ‘Bishop’s Children’ Dahlias is the garden, which we grew from seed three years ago. They’ll be stored in a cold, dry garage over Winter and be great for pollinators when they flower again next Summer. 🌸🪏

There’s still time to plant a variety of Alliums to get a great harvest next Summer. Shallot and onion sets, as well as garlic cloves can all be planted now, and a longer growing season will mean bigger bulbs next year! 😋🧅🧄

The first H***e frost of the year added some sparkle to our vegetable patch this morning. Lots of veggies taste better after a frost including cabbages, kale and Brussels sprouts. 🥦🥬😋
