3 Kitchen Design Mistakes Most Homeowners Make (And How to Avoid Them)

1️⃣ Not thinking about how the kitchen will actually be used: A kitchen should be designed around daily life. Think about larger drawers, internal storage solutions, corner mechanisms, integrated bins and extra-wide pan drawers rather than endless cupboards. It’s the accumulation of these small details that creates a kitchen that truly works in real life.

2️⃣ Poor lighting planning: Lighting plays a crucial role in how a kitchen feels and functions. Interior lighting, task lighting and natural daylight all need to work together. If lighting isn’t considered early in the design, shadows can fall across key preparation areas and the space simply won’t perform as well as it should.

3️⃣ Rushing the design process: A kitchen is a major investment, so every detail should be visualised before placing the order. High-quality CGI renders allow homeowners to see exactly how the finished project will look and function, helping refine materials, layout and details before anything is built.

In the UK, many so called ‘bespoke’ kitchens still rely on standard cabinet sizes, often a 720mm base unit. But in German kitchens, cabinets are manufactured to the millimetre, meaning every dimension can be adjusted to suit the space and the client.

Before & After 📷

The only original elements retained were the cold store pantry and the window above the sink.

By using matching door fronts and subtle button fixings, we were able to disguise the cold store pantry so it’s built in as part of a run of fully fitted cabinetry. A simple glazed door provides access while maintaining visual continuity, a small detail that makes a big difference.

Between the original kitchen and the new extension sat a structural goalpost supporting the steelwork. Rather than allowing this to interrupt the flow of the space, additional panels were introduced to fully disguise the steel, ensuring the cabinetry reads as intentional and uninterrupted. This detail sits neatly between the dual larder and Fisher & Paykel refrigerator.
