🎄 Yesterday, our Newark team went full festive mode! 🍕✂️🔥

At our now-traditional origami workshop, fuelled by pizza and warmed by the glow of the televised fireplace, the team folded a whole herd of reindeer to bring our tree at St Mary Magdalene Church to life for the Newark Christmas Tree Festival 🦌✨

Joining local schools, creatives, charities and businesses, we’re helping bring a little extra festive magic to town. Come see all the trees 29 Nov – 7 Dec at the Newark Town Hall

🎃 We’ve rebranded… again! 👻

Found somewhere in the shadows of the studio, our new look emerges. Bold, eerie and built to last at least 24hr.

Happy Halloween from the UMC team 🕸️

👆 Hold the dots and drag to explore Elstree’s past, present, and future!

For over a century, BBC Elstree has been at the heart of Britain’s film and television heritage, from its origins as Neptune Studios in 1914 to its long-standing role as home to EastEnders.

That legacy now enters a new chapter. In collaboration with AXA IM Alts and Oxygen Studios, we are helping transform the site into Fairbanks Studios, a sustainable, state of the art media campus designed for the next generation of screen production.

Named in honour of Douglas Fairbanks Jr., the proposals respect Elstree’s remarkable history while looking firmly to the future, quadrupling stage capacity with five new sound stages, introducing a five storey Media Hub with 58,000 square feet of workspace, targeting BREEAM Outstanding and Albert Studio Sustainability Standard accreditation, and incorporating an 800 kWp PV system to offset regulated energy use.

This time last week UMC’s London team were lacing up for the hashtag , running in support of Crisis and their vital work to end homelessness. Together they’ve already raised £720. A fantastic effort for a fantastic cause.

A big thank you to everyone who has donated so far, and a reminder that it’s not too late to add your support:

We’re delighted to have supported the creation of On Freedom’s Wings, the iconic Lancaster Bomber sculpture now standing proudly in Lincolnshire.

The sculpture tells the story of Lancaster VN-N (R5689), which crashed nearby in Thurlby Wood after suffering engine failure, only two of the propellers are designed to appear as if they are rotating. The frame of the sculpture lifts the aircraft to 15m above the ground and is designed to echo the sweep of wartime searchlights, adding to the sense of motion and drama and is visible to an estimated 34,000 motorists every day on the A46. At 93 feet tall, weighing 93 tonnes and with a 31 metre wingspan, it is taller than the Angel of the North and a striking full scale representation of the Lancaster aircraft.

UMC Architects contributed to the project by developing the 3D model and providing technical design coordination, ensuring the structural and visual elements aligned with the fabrication and installation requirements, alongside engineers, fabricators and the Bomber County Gateway Trust.

This new landmark is not only an impressive feat of design and engineering, but also a powerful reminder of bravery, sacrifice and heritage.

We know, we know… it’s been a little while since we’ve shared a project update! Life at UMC Architects has been busy, but we’re delighted to share that the hybrid planning application for Thrive Park – a 135-hectare employment destination in North Warwickshire – has now been submitted, marking an important step in bringing this vision to life.

Set within a parkland setting, half the site is dedicated to green and blue infrastructure, blending workplaces into a landscape designed to boost biodiversity by 15%.

A central landscaped corridor links logistics, manufacturing and R&D areas, with a legible and accessible network of roads, footways and cycle routes converging at the Mobility Hub, supporting sustainable transport and low-carbon movement across the site.

The Thrive Mobility Hub reimagines the historic connectivity of the Curdworth Tunnel, once a vital industrial link, as a modern space designed for cyclists and pedestrians and is set to become the UK’s first ‘cycle-through’ hub.

Generous landscape buffers along the Birmingham & Fazeley Canal protect heritage while creating accessible recreational spaces.

Thoughtful building elevations and pixelated façades break down massing, ensuring architecture and landscape work together to create a memorable, vibrant park.

We’re delighted to announce the promotion of James Banham to Architectural Technologist, following the successful completion of his BSc (Hons) in Architectural Technology.

James has consistently demonstrated a strong technical understanding and a collaborative mindset. Working closely with Gary Hauton and Adam Stephenson, he has played an integral role across a number of projects, including multi-unit industrial schemes at Hinckley Park, end user developments, and complex refurbishment works.

His growth and contribution at UMC have been outstanding, and this promotion reflects the value he brings to both our team and our clients.

Congratulations James, a well-earned next step in your professional journey.

This weekend, the UMC Architects team is setting off to conquer the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge! ⛰️💪

We’ll be hiking Pen-y-ghent, Whernside, and Ingleborough—a tough 24-mile route with over 1,500m of ascent—all within 12 hours. It’s a serious test of endurance, but we’re doing it for a brilliant cause.

We’re raising money for CASY (Counselling and Support for Young People), a fantastic charity that provides free, confidential counselling to children and young people across the East Midlands. Their work makes a real difference to mental health and emotional wellbeing at a time when support is more important than ever.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who has already donated—we truly appreciate your generosity. 🙏

If you’re able to support us, no matter how big or small, please consider making a donation. Every pound helps CASY reach more young people in need and keeps us motivated when the blisters kick in! 🥾

👉 Donate here: https://lnkd.in/g_sndTc5

Wish us luck, updates from the peaks coming soon!
