Long post alert 🙂
We’ve had some delays recently because of the very unpleasant and unpredictable weather. We thought it might be helpful to share some of the reasons why poor weather can delay landscaping works and the effects of excessive rain and ground water☔️ .
Any of these may compromise the finish of a project and safety too!
🌿1. **Soil Saturation**: Excessive rain saturates the soil, making it too muddy and unstable to work with, which can delay planting, turfing, and other soil-related tasks.
🌿2. **Erosion and Runoff**: Rain can cause soil erosion and runoff, washing away prepared areas and necessitating additional work to restore the site before continuing the project.
🌿3. **Paving, Concrete and Grout Setting**: Rain interferes with the setting and curing processes of laying paving, grouting and concrete work leading to weakened structures and requiring delays until dry conditions return.
🌿4. **Equipment Efficiency**: Wet conditions can make it difficult for heavy machinery and equipment to operate efficiently, increasing the risk of getting stuck or causing damage to the site.
🌿5. **Safety Concerns**: Rain creates slippery and hazardous working conditions, increasing the risk of accidents and injuries, which can halt work until it is safe to resume.
🌿6. **Material Damage**: Certain landscaping materials, such as mulch, topsoil, render, resin and pavers, can be damaged or become unusable when exposed to excessive moisture, leading to delays in sourcing replacements.
🌿7. **Schedule Disruptions**: Persistent rain can disrupt planned schedules, requiring rescheduling of tasks and coordination with deliveries, which can extend the overall project timeline.
🌿8. **Compaction Issues**: Proper sub-base compaction is difficult in wet conditions, which can affect the stability of foundations and paved surfaces, requiring extra time to dry before proceeding.
🌿9. **Landscape Planting Delays**: Planting trees, shrubs, and flowers in overly wet conditions can lead to root rot and poor establishment, necessitating delays until the soil dries out enough for healthy planting conditions.
🌿 10. **Drainage Issues**: Poor drainage during construction can lead to standing water, which can damage materials and hinder progress. Proper drainage solutions need to be implemented to avoid long-term issues.
We pride ourselves on being honest and also getting a quality finish on our projects. Let’s hope we get some more dry days ahead ☀️
