Our dahlias are starting to shine! The dark-foliage varieties are especially striking, adding beautiful contrast to the border when they're nestled amongst all the lush greenery.

Although dahlias are tender plants and generally can't be left outside over winter, they're well worth the effort. Simply lift and store the tubers over winter when the first frost arrives, and they'll reward you year after year with an abundance of gorgeous flowers, perfect for filling your borders and cutting for the house.

We all love seeking out beautiful flowers to create instant colour in our gardens. But don't forget to explore the plants not currently in bloom, those waiting patiently for their time to shine.

Its Hydrangea season, and these beautiful shrubs are also our Plant of the Month for June. Although relatively easy to care for, there are a couple of points to remember. Follow these and you should have beautiful blooms every summer!

🌿 Water – Hydrangeas don’t like to dry out! If you plan to grow them in pots, ensure it is a good sized container, use a soil based compost for better water retention, and consider that in hot weather you may need to water daily. Planting them in the ground would mean a little less upkeep.

🌿 Shade – To keep Hydrangeas out of the strongest sun, consider the planting position and the light it will be exposed to through the day. Hydrangeas will thrive best in a north to east position where they will be sheltered from the intense afternoon sun, avoiding scorch on the foliage or early dropping of flowers.

🌿 Colour – We’ve noticed blue to purple Hydrangeas are the most popular colour with our customers, but as the pink or blue varieties respond to the pH of the soil, you may need to make some adjustments to keep your plant blooming in your chosen colour. The blue flowers need acidic conditions, so use ericaceous soil or colourant feed if your natural soil pH does not match the required conditions.

🌿 Don’t buy too early – We all love garden colour as soon as possible, but Hydrangeas in flower in March just aren’t ready for the elements outside. If you’re ever buying early in the year to plan ahead, concentrate on a good framework of bare stems or good strong buds, for a healthier plant in the long run.

With so many plants looking beautiful in our garden centre, we asked our plant manager Dylan which varieties are proving most popular with our customers. These are his top picks!

🐝 Eryngium ‘Big Blue’ – The bees love it, and our customers love it too! With steely blue architectural spikes and flowerheads opening a stunning electric hue, these sun loving perennials make an excellent addition to a mixed border or pollinator friendly scheme.

🌹 Rose ‘Minvera’ – With rich purple shades changing as the flowers age, and an intense fragrance reminiscent of old rose, Minerva is a must have near a path or patio where the scent can be enjoyed.

🍒 Cosmos ‘Cherry Chocolate’ – This stunning little plant was previously on the shortlist for the Chelsea Flower Show Plant of the Year, eventually winning second place. Its excellent for cut flowers with the long, slender stems, and the magenta flowers seem to glow in the sun.
