With each passing year, International Women’s Day creates an important pause within architecture and the wider built environment. It draws attention to the experiences of women across our industry and prompts conversations that reach beyond the date itself.

To mark the occasion, we spoke with women across our studio at different stages of their careers. Those conversations have come together in a new article on our website, “Perspectives from Women at SPACE.”

Their reflections offer a candid snapshot of where the profession stands today. Progress is visible, yet the pace remains uneven. Alongside this, the conversations revealed the quiet influence of peer networks within practice, where shared advice, lived experience, and honest discussion continue to support women as they navigate their careers.

As Architect Donna Khan reflects in the article:

“I’ve found real strength in female peers. When women come together in practice, there’s an unspoken understanding and a willingness to share advice and lift each other up.”

Reflecting on the conversations, Sara Townley, Brand Manager at SPACE Architects, adds:

“These conversations reminded us that, for women, a career in architecture is multifaceted. It is made up of individual journeys, some challenging, some encouraging, and often both at once. International Women’s Day creates space for those perspectives to be heard more widely, but its true value lies in acting on what we come to understand so that the next generation encounters fewer barriers than the last.”

This year’s theme, Give to Gain, centres on the idea that progress depends on what the profession chooses to give. When opportunity and recognition are extended at every stage of a career, the discipline becomes stronger and more in tune with the communities it serves.

Last week, we welcomed friends of the practice to Spaceworks to celebrate the start of SPACE Architects’ 70th anniversary year and the launch of our @70 programme.

The building was set for the occasion, with the @70 mark projected across the façade and the atrium tree glowing in SPACE orange at its centre.

Partners, alumni, clients, and colleagues gathered throughout the evening to reconnect with project teams and collaborators. Conversations quickly picked up where they had left off, with stories shared about past projects and the people behind them.

Guests explored a newly installed timeline tracing the practice’s journey from 1956 to 2026, showcasing defining projects and major milestones. Opposite, shelves showcased photographs of past and present team members, many of whom were in the room.

During the evening, CEO Rob Charlton addressed the room, reflecting on the practice’s seventy years in business and its role in the region. He then introduced the @70 programme, a series of events and initiatives that will unfold across 2026.

We would like to thank everyone who joined us to mark the start of this anniversary year.

The World Design Congress, often called ‘The Olympics of Design’, returned to London this year for the first time in over 50 years. Hosted at the Barbican Centre, the congress brought together leading voices from across the global design community.

Our Head of Research, Catherine Sinclair, attended the event, and her reflections, now live on our website, highlight a programme shaped by powerful keynote speakers including Charlot Magayi, winner of the 2022 Earthshot Prize, and Leyla Acaroglu, founder of the UnSchool of Disruptive Design. From community-powered innovation to regenerative business models and reimagining the global economy, the keynotes set a powerful tone. Sessions explored themes such as the Rights of Nature and bioregional design, each offering a bold vision of design’s role in shaping a sustainable future.

A stark reminder of the urgency came from the UN’s latest progress report, which revealed that only 35% of the Sustainable Development Goals are on track, nearly half are moving too slowly, and 18% are in reverse.

Reflecting on the congress, Catherine noted that what resonated most was not one particular talk or discussion, but the strong sense of shared purpose that united those in the room.

We recently received several twilight photographs of Woodham Academy from award-winning photographer Andrew Heptinstall. These images capture the building as daylight fades, beautifully showcasing its impactful design and presence.

Setting a new standard for sustainable educational buildings, Woodham Academy was the first school in the North East to be designed to the Department for Education’s Net Zero Carbon in Operation (NZCiO) standards. From the first concept sketch in August 2022 to the final handover, the design remained true to its ambitious vision, delivering an exceptional learning environment that combines innovative architecture with environmental responsibility.

The Creative Reuse Team visited former SPACE project, Darlington Hippodrome, for this year's Christmas pantomime.

"It's not often we get to experience the buildings we design as 'customers', but when we do, it's rewarding to see them working as intended and even more so when they're clearly loved by those who use them!"
