🌿 Re-Potting Houseplants 🌿

Now is the ideal time to re-pot your houseplants and give them the space they need to thrive. As a general rule, move your plant up by one pot size and use a high-quality houseplant compost or a good multi-purpose peat-free compost to support healthy root growth.

If Sciarid (fungus gnat) flies have been a persistent nuisance, take the opportunity to tackle the problem properly. Carefully remove the top 5cm of old compost, as this is where the adults lay their eggs and where future infestations begin.

Once re-potted, water the plant in well to settle the new compost around the roots. However, avoid overwatering during the first few weeks. The plant needs time to establish itself in its new home, and excessive moisture can do more harm than good.

A little attention now will reward you with healthier roots, stronger growth and happier houseplants for the months ahead. πŸͺ΄

πŸ’‹ Salvia 'Hot Lips' is one of the most popular and reliable flowering salvias, valued for both its ornamental appeal and its benefits to wildlife. Rich in nectar, it provides an excellent food source for bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects throughout the flowering season.

A recipient of the - Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit, this long-flowering perennial can eventually reach around 1 metre in height. It responds well to light pruning during the growing season, helping to maintain a compact shape and encourage fresh blooms.

One of its most distinctive features is its variable flower colour. Blooms can appear deep red, pure white, or display the characteristic red-and-white bicolour combination, often changing with weather and seasonal conditions.

Like all salvias, 'Hot Lips' thrives in a sunny, sheltered position and performs best in south- or west-facing gardens with well-drained soil.

In our display, the vibrant flowers of Salvia 'Hot Lips' are beautifully complemented by the dark foliage of Euphorbia 'Miner's Merlot' and the rich purple leaves of Heuchera, creating a striking and long-lasting planting combination.

🌱 Thursday's Gardening Tip: Deadhead Rhododendrons & Azaleas Now!

If your Rhododendrons and Azaleas have finished flowering, now is the perfect time to remove the spent blooms. This simple task, known as deadheading, can make a big difference to next year's display.

Carefully pinch out or snip off the faded flower heads, taking care not to damage the new shoots forming just beneath them. By removing old flowers, the plant can redirect its energy away from seed production and into developing strong new growth and flower buds for next spring.

🌿 To give your plants an extra boost, apply an ericaceous feed around the base after deadheading. This will help support healthy growth throughout the summer and encourage an even better show of blooms next year.

A few minutes spent now can mean a spectacular display next season!

πŸ’™ How to Keep Your Hydrangeas Blue πŸ’™

There's nothing quite like the stunning blue blooms of a hydrangea, but did you know that their colour depends largely on the chemistry of your soil?

For hydrangeas to produce those sought-after blue flowers, two key ingredients are needed: aluminium in the soil and an acidic soil pH between 4.5 and 5.5. If the soil becomes too alkaline, the plant can no longer absorb the aluminium it needs, and those beautiful blue flowers may gradually turn pink or purple instead.

🌱 How to maintain blue blooms:
Apply an aluminium sulphate product, such as Vitax Hydrangea Colourant, during the growing season. This helps provide the aluminium needed for blue flower development while also encouraging the acidic conditions hydrangeas prefer. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully.

🌿 Prefer a more natural approach?
Garden sulphur can be used to gradually lower soil pH over time. Some gardeners also add used coffee grounds around the base of their plants, which may help increase acidity slowly while improving soil structure.

πŸ’§ Choose your water wisely
If you live in a hard water area (as we do!), consider watering your hydrangeas with rainwater whenever possible. Hard tap water contains calcium and other minerals that can slowly raise soil pH, making it harder for plants to maintain their blue colouring.

With the right soil conditions and a little care, your hydrangeas can reward you with vibrant blue flowers year after year. πŸ’™

🌿Step into our shade house and discover a treasure trove of plants that thrive where others struggle. Whether you have a challenging shady corner or see it as an exciting planting opportunity, you'll find plenty of inspiration among our collection of ferns, Japanese maples, Heuchera, Hostas, and more.

One plant currently stealing the spotlight is Blechnum brasiliense 'Volcano'. Native to the mountainous regions of Brazil and extending into Peru, this remarkable fern combines exotic beauty with real garden presence.

Resembling a miniature tree fern, it produces elegant, slender green fronds up to 1 metre (3ft) long, rising above a graceful trunk that can reach around 30cm in height. Impressive enough on its own, but it's the spectacular new growth that makes 'Volcano' truly unforgettable. Emerging in vibrant shades of pink, salmon, and deep red, the fresh fronds create a stunning display from spring through to mid-summer.

🌱 Growing tips: For best results, grow in a container using ericaceous compost and feed regularly with Maxicrop Seaweed Feed. Provide some protection from the harshest winter weather by moving it into a cool greenhouse or plastic grow-house during the colder months.

Come and see why this extraordinary fern is turning so many heads in our shade house!

What's YOUR favourite resilient plant?

Climate change is already influencing the way we garden. With winters becoming generally milder and wetter, and summers bringing longer dry periods and heatwaves, it's worth choosing plants that can cope with a wider range of conditions.

If you're planning new planting this summer, here are a few reliable options to consider:

🌱 Viburnum - A hardy shrub that provides attractive seasonal interest and performs well through both dry and wet conditions.

🌱 Lavender –- Thrives in full sun and well-drained soil. Once established, it is highly tolerant of heat and drought.

🌱 Geranium 'Rozanne' (pictured) - Produces masses of violet-blue flowers from June through to October and is remarkably resilient in changing weather conditions.

🌱 Erigeron (Mexican Fleabane, pictured) - A robust perennial with delicate white-pink flowers from May to October. It copes well with heat and dry periods but prefers free-draining soil. On heavier clay soils, simply incorporate some grit before planting.

By selecting resilient plants now, you can create a garden that is better prepared for the changing seasons ahead.

Tell us which plants in YOUR garden have proven to be the toughest and most reliable year after year.
