Jacobs ladder purple rain are ready to go 😍.
These are clump forming perennials and grow around 60cms. They flower from May to August. They thrive in full sun but will still do great in particular shade. And the flowers are absolutely beautiful 😁. Oh and they are also non toxic to pets. What's not to love πŸ₯° I can't wait to get some planted in my garden.
They are available for Β£3 in 9cm pots but I will soon be pottering them on πŸ™‚

Sarcococca Confusa Sweet Box ready to go πŸ™‚.
A slow growing evergreen shrub with glossy green leaves. Acts as a great fill through the year but when winter comes it produces little white flowers and fills the air with the most gorgeous smell. I'm planting mine by my back door so I can catch a whiff every time I walk past πŸ₯°

I thought I would give you an update on the homemade cloche to show you how effective it has been. So the first picture you can see almost all of the tips have been nibbled and after a week and a half of using the cloche you can see all the healthy, undamaged, shoots appearing.

If you bought an Echinacea from me last year, now would be a great time to check on it. Like I said in a previous post slugs love to eat these plants and the new shoots are irresistible to them.

I planted one last year.amd gave it a thick layer of mulch for the winter. New shoots have started to emerge over the last week or so but they have already been nibbled. So to give the plant a bit of a chance I pop a homemade cloche, made out of an old plastic bottle, on top. Once the leaves are big enough to withstand a bit of damage I remove the bottle. This doesn't stop the slugs from coming up underneath the soil so you still need to keep an eye on them but it does give the plant a bit of a chance

My second goal for the garden this year is drought resistant plants.
With the summer of 2024 predicted to be even hotter in the UK than last year I want my plants to stand a better chance of surviving the dryer weather, as well as me being able to conserve more water for my veg patch. So I am adding more drought resistant plants.
I have Heliopsis Scarbra summer sun, Echinacea purpurea, Lupin and Hardy Geranium to add to my stock list. These are all great during a drought once they are well established.

Wow!!! So many slugs! 😱
Thanks to the mild winter we have had in the UK this year, slugs are everywhere!!! Instead of hibernating their way through winter, deep down in the soil, they have been up in our gardens, munching and growing and breeding 🫣
So I have 2 main goals for my garden this year. The first is to add more slug resistant plants. If the predictions for wetter, warmer winters come true then I want to have at least some plants in my garden that won't get eaten.
So I have found 4 plants to add to my stock list which should not get eaten.
Geum Queen of orange.
Potentilla Monarch Velvet.
Penstemon Cambridge mix.
Verbascum phoenicum Violetta and Rosetta

Potentilla Monarch's Velvet. These are great for the front/mid of the board as they grow around 40cm. They love the sun but will be ok in partial shade and they will keep flowing all summer long. The contrast between the pretty little red flower and green stem looks stunning 😍

A well earned cuppa after potting on around 125 plants πŸ₯΅πŸ˜΄ nice to see the sun again though πŸ™‚

Happy St David's Day everyone 😁.

I thought it would be fitting to do a post about Physostigma False Dragonhead today with it being St David's Day.

Another name for this beautiful plant is Obedient plant. It is absolutely fascinating to me as I've never known any other plant do this because if you take the flower of any other plant between your thumb and forefinger and gently try and move it around the flower spike the flower will either snap off, or it will spring back to its original position. The Physostegia virgiana however has flowers that stay in the new position when you let them go! Hence the name. I find this so so strange.

I have 6 of these left. They are in their second year of growth so will flower this year. They are Β£5 each.
