Stover Canal Trust

Stover Canal Trust The Stover Canal Trust is a charity which is dedicated to the preservation and restoration of the Stover Canal in South Devon, England.

Since 1999 a group of enthusiasts have dedicated themselves to the preservation and restoration of the Stover Canal in South Devon, England. Built in the 18th Century, the canal was used for nearly 150 years to transport clay and other minerals from the Bovey Basin, and granite from quarries on Dartmoor, to the docks at Teignmouth. The Stover Canal Trust now works with local councils and o

ther interested parties to preserve the line of the canal and to restore it as an amenity for the local community. Some lengths of the canal towpath form part of the Templer Way, a historic trail which links the canal, the tramway and other legacies of the Templer family.

Our first ever Evening Canoe Challenge proved to be the most well attended ever. Some 25 paddlers from all age groups attended on various waterborne craft and made it safely to the canal-side barbecue which was well worth the effort. Hopefully the tides next year will enable another evening event in 2027.
Thank-you to all who took part, and a big thank-you to the volunteers who made it all possible. See you all again next year!

WORK has begun on a major project to repair a flood-damaged embankment bordering Stover Canal, paving the way for the reinstatement of a popular local footpath and cycleway later this year.

The Stover Canal Trust strives to conduct activities with consideration to the global environment. With this in mind, we have been thinking about retiring our diesel powered tractor. The current price of fuel has prompted the purchase of a wood burning alternative. Do look out for us along the towpath in the months to come!

Good people of Newton Abbot.
Great news! The Jetty Msrsh cycleway and path is now fully open between the hospital roundabout and MT Tums cafe and they await you with fantastic refreshments after the walk through the marsh area.

The flood water has now dropped below the path and we have cleared the debris from the surface of the temporary bypass section, however there is a small covering of mud between the stones.
We recently under the instruction of Devon County Council Public Rights Of Way Department, we cut back the vegetation to enhance the route, prior to it re opening.

We hope you enjoy walking along the route.
