Hill House Nursery, Landscove, Staverton, Devon HILL HOUSE NURSERY
IS CLOSED PERMANENTLY Some of Hyams's planting still survives including some now rarely seen Camellias. MI5 thought he was using code!

Open year round, 7/7 & all Bank Holidays, including Easter Sunday, the Nursery was started in 1981 when Raymond Hubbard and family came to Devon from Upshire, Essex. The garden has some unusual & even rare plants in it, originally designed and planted by Edward Hyams, the first lay owner of this former vicarage. Raymond restored the neglected garden & started propagating some of its contents and g

radually moved entirely from growing salad plants to growing ornamentals. Where our greenhouses now stand was his kitchen garden and vineyard. He was among the first to re-introduce the growing of wine grapes to Britain. Raymond was the pioneer of the use of biological controls in commercial greenhouse growing & at one time was investigated by the secret services because he was sending and receiving telegrams from Russian biologists and growers, containing Latin names for predatory insects. Our stock ranges from the well loved and known to the rare and unusual to veg plants. Our garden is open, free of charge. Dogs welcome on leads in garden & Nursery.
