🏡🪵Small job completed back in December, rotted exterior steps.
Rot is the biggest thing wood faces but with these steps it happended sooner than it should. The steps has a rubber grip on each tread so when ever it rained the moisture couldnt escape and just sat on the timber. The wood couldnt breath and kept absorbing moisture. I understand the reasoning for wanting grip on the treads but don't use rubber mats.
I gave the client 2 options of either replacing everything or just doing to rotted bits of timber. The client just wanted the rotted bits replacing, so this was 2 new stringers and 5 steps. I threw away the rubber grips and advised them to not put anything like that back on.
It rained all day and I thought we'll with my pop up gazebo I'd be dry. But I was very wrong. I got soaked and everything got drenched. Lesson learnt that day. Get some sides for the gazebo!!
All in a days work.
