Brightblue Studio at Molten Brightblue Studio Architects | Designers | at Molten Cafe and Gallery | Fish Quay in North Shields | Ecological Focus

Molten is the name of the new glass gallery, cafe with gelato, bar and studio in the windscreen building down on the Fish Quay. Brightblue Studio are a hybrid architecture studio and glass workshop. Our passion for sustainable design is evident in every space we create. We believe that the best architecture emerges from the integration of good design with social and environmental responsibility, w

hich fuses with our experience as a working glass studio to create cutting-edge and inventive solutions to our clients' needs. Brightblue was originally established in 2004 and is based by the sea, in a building which is also an exemplar of the work we do. Currently undergoing renovation work, Ballard's Smoke House makes the most of its orientation and location, using sustainable design and materials to achieve Activhaus standard. It represents a strong connection with the environment which is at the heart of the practice. Brightblue has been recognised through numerous awards from RIBA, RICS, GAGA environmental Awards, and the LABC. And by Art in Context with their award winning entry for 2004's Cut Glass installation in Ireland's National Botanical Gardens. They have also been selected for numerous prestigious large-scale sculptural art installations in buildings. For more information, visit us at www.brightbluestudio.co.uk

Progress on the Scotswood Natural Community Garden Site - Phase 1 complete and all ground works are in. We found some useful old foundations that we have re-used. The next phase is to insulate the bases of the containers, and then place them for the instant building.

Different sort of BIG plant (50 tonne lift) with a Big day down at Scotswood Natural Community Garden delivering containers for inclusion in the building, into the car park, as we prepare to start on site. Excellent central '30s tower of the John Marley Centre in the background.🤓

Food growing here at Molten is starting to be more clearly understood - it is complex with the windshield glass house which is what we are testing - grapes, figs (ripening just now), cucumbers in November last year, tomatos, wood sorrells, chillis, peashoots, many herbs and the humble parsley - this plant weathered last year's snows and wind outside in a tiny pot and is now this - and very tasty 😋 Citrus on standards is proving more tricky. Honeyberry, goji berry, and much more in pots and planters outside..with a pond doubling the wildlife - it's good to see some bugs flying about.

An interesting book that's come along. Extra-ordinary integration we have with fungi - from eating rocks to the Wood Wide Web as it's termed, which is a fabulous concept to understand the subterranean interconnectedness and communication within a forest. These energies have been mostly hidden from view until now.
In construction there are investigations into using fungi as insulation, bricks, structural support within the ground and then more radically as living support as types of service provision – and then as any new tech - on Mars.
Some of us though have dry and wet rot and don't appreciate it quite as much.
Intriguing book which is for our times of growing interconnections -
“The more we learn about fungi, the less makes sense without them”:

Well for all those looking forward to the summer, for all of the UK the sunset is now getting later - from TODAY. 👏
That means that though the 21st is the Winter solstice, which is a bigger reason to celebrate, there is more brightness in the evening sky from today.

Thought you might be interested in the image below - which is a simple sunpath diagram, and we use these sunpath projections on our initial assessment of projects to assess the likely sun angles and heights. (Back in the day we used helidon's with physical models.)
Anyone could do this on their living spaces so they can work out where best to put things.

Now we model all our projects in 3D so the computer than models all the sun movements within and around the project, on any day - and we plot the project onto the world so it makes adjustments for this. This let's us explore what colours or penetrations of light by placement of openings and coloured glass, we can achieve in a design. This brings joy. And often still unexpected results.

Vendée Round the World Race at the moment - good for stretching horizons: Extra ordinary boat/planes hurtling south and east
So imagining leaving the Tyne, turn right (south) and following their route : Having struggled through the doldrums and now a bit more slow progess – it's now further south and east.

This guy has an friendly approach if you want to watch something:

As some of you will know we are opening a glass gallery here in the Spring. And to make that happen, in a round about way, currently on an intensive course – with today's subject –

We will share very soon what we find out, and actually be able to taste it!
