🌳What is Crown Lifting?🌳
Crown lifting is the removal of the lowest branches from a tree's crown to increase the clearance between the ground and the canopy.
Under BS3998:2010 – Tree Work – Recommendations, crown lifting should be carried out by removing or shortening selected lower branches while retaining the tree's natural shape and balanced crown. Where possible, temporary lower branches should be retained, particularly on young trees, as they contribute to trunk development and overall tree health.
Crown lifting may be specified to:
• Provide clearance over roads, footpaths, driveways and public spaces.
• Improve access for pedestrians and vehicles.
• Prevent branches from obstructing buildings, signs or street lighting.
• Improve visibility where appropriate, without unnecessarily removing the lower crown.
BS3998 emphasises that only the minimum amount of pruning necessary to achieve the required clearance should be undertaken. Removing too many lower branches or lifting the crown excessively can create large pruning wounds, alter the tree's natural form, increase mechanical loading on the remaining crown and reduce the tree's vitality.
Every crown lift should have a clearly defined objective, balancing the need for clearance with the long-term health, stability and appearance of the tree.
