Plant of the week (bulb edition) 🍂🪻

This will be our last plant of the week for the year 🎄

Lily of the valley (Convallaria majalis)

Lily of the valley is widely grown in gardens for its scented flowers and ground-covering abilities.

Its low spreading habit also makes it ideal for growing as a ground cover plant. Lily of the valley thrives in a moist, shaded spot, and gradually spreads to form dense clumps of lush green foliage, creating a perfumed carpet of colour.

To plant these bulbs first dig a hole in the soil around 30cm deep and loosen the soil at the bottom. Then plant the rhizomes around 2 inches deep and spread the roots out underneath the crown of the bulb so they aren’t clumping. Also ensuring the bulbs are around 6 inches apart from each other. Cover the bulbs and water well. 🌸

Plant of the week (bulb edition) 🍂🪻

Large flowering mixed crocus (Crocus vernus)

Shades of purple, striped purple, orange and white make up this lush mix of cup shaped flowers. Sprouting in March and April above slender, lance shaped leaves to around 5 inches tall.

These vigorous bulbs are fast growing and like gritty, poor to moderately fertile well drained soil in sun to partial shade.

They look great growing in places such as lawns, borders, and containers. They can be planted under deciduous trees, but avoid evergreen trees and areas that can get waterlogged in winter.

Plant them around 3 inches into the soil and cover well.
