Ever wondered why sash windows have horns?

Originally, sash horns served a practical purpose. As larger panes of glass became more common during the Victorian and Edwardian periods, horns were added to strengthen the joints of traditional timber sashes.

But they soon became more than a structural feature.

Different horn shapes appeared across periods, regions and even individual joinery workshops, giving sash windows their own subtle character and helping define the architectural style of a property.

Modern sash windows no longer need horns for structural support in quite the same way. However, they remain an important detail when recreating an authentic heritage appearance.

That’s why Ultimate Rose is available with three seamless run-through horn designs:

Listed building? Sometimes replacing the original windows simply isn’t the right option.

That’s where Incarnation secondary glazing comes in.

Fitted discreetly to the inside of the existing window, it helps improve thermal and acoustic performance while allowing original features to remain in place.
