It’s taken a few years, but these Hemerocallis ‘Autumn Red’ have really come on this time! I planted this bed up around 4 years ago using plants for shade and semi-shade.

Really enjoyed planting this lovely selection of plants today, all part of a scheme I recently created for the customer.
The soil in the bed is fairly poor and stony, in a sunny spot, so it’s perfect for the olive trees, which were already on site in containers.
To add to these, I chose some Lavender ‘Hidcote,’ Cistus (carbariensis), Geranium ‘Wargrave Pink,’ Salvia ‘Caradonna,’ Allium ‘Violet Beauty’ and Stipa tenuissima. This is the first time I’ve incorporated ornamental grasses, and they work very well with alliums and salvias!
I also selected a climbing rose (‘Compassion’) and a clematis (‘Rubromarginata’) to climb up the new trellises and, in time, they will grow into each other and flower at around the same time of year.
Finally, I planted a Phormium ‘Pink Stripe’ in a small raised bed that’s more shaded.

A day spent tidying the garden. The snake’s head fritillaries were planted two years ago, and didn’t come up last year, so I thought I’d lost them. It’s been a lovely day!

Dwarf magnolia tree looking stunning in today’s sunshine - it seems to get more resilient to wind damage with every passing year. I planted it around eight or nine years ago for a family friend, but I think the cultivar is ‘Susan.’

I’ve just planted a flowering currant (Ribes sanguineum ‘Red Bross’) in this space, which will become a more permanent fixture. It’s a very pretty shrub in spring, and also attracts lots of pollinating insects.

Another of my absolute favourite shrubs in spring is Spiraea ‘Arguta’! I see a lot, this time of year, that have been clipped regularly into a neat ball, but display very few flowers, which is a crying shame. If you want yours to look like this, then prune once soon after flowering and then leave well alone! In general, that’s a good rule of thumb for spring shrubs that flower on the previous year’s growth. I like to make gardens look attractive and good for pollinators, so I think it pays not to be overly neat and tidy.
