Kirsty is running the London Marathon this weekend again to raise funds for her charity The Chris Aked Foundation and she needs your sponsorship!

Not only is Kirsty the fittest member of our team, she is also undoubtedly the most positive. Despite losing her husband, the lovely Chris Aked, to cancer, she setup a registered charity in his name and their mission is to help children and families going through cancer treatment.

They now help hundreds of families each year and the burden of fundraising therefore expands every year.

Last time she ran the London Marathon she raised over £10,000. Let’s help her beat that this year.

Good luck Kirsty you’re gonna smash this!

Tell me that Spring is on the way without telling me that Spring is on the way …… my chickens have started laying again!!! Yes - a rare divergence from all things floral but nevertheless a very clear sign. It’s happening!

Aswell as the daffodils and snowdrops, I’m noticing lots of Euphorbia getting ready to flower. There’s very few planting designs we do without some form of Euphorbia. Not only is it evergreen and drought tolerant, it usually begins to flower in Feb when we are all desperate for some signs that Spring is on the way!

Love a frosty morning pic - check out the contrasting colours and forms! These are some of the plants we use a lot because they are reliable and also give that important winter presence: Phlomis, Euphorbia, Libertia, Pennisetum - you can just see the Hydrangea Annabelle rounded seed heads in the background too. Gorgeous. Heated gilet on full blast this morning!

How to cheat at bulbs: I remember a good friend saying to me ‘have you got your bulbs in yet’ and thinking ‘are you kidding me? I’m still battling weeds, looking at entire beds to overhaul, hedge trimming, mulching etc etc’. Bulbs felt like just another thing to add to the bottom of the never ending list of garden jobs. So - here’s my minimum effort, maximum reward bulb tips: 1. Plant Allium Purple Sensation in sunny areas, in between grasses or perennials is perfect, or anywhere that needs some early oomph. 2. Plant white daffodils in shady areas, beneath hydrangeas or trees or hedges. Any leftovers can go in pots to bring out to the front doorstep when in flower. You can thank me next Spring!

It’s been a bumper year for ladybirds and they are all now finding a little spot to snuggle into for winter. These Phlomis seed heads are covered in them! There’s no need for a big cut back until the Spring - the insects will appreciate the habitats over winter plus these seed heads look amazing in the frost
