We have had a super busy month. This emergency boiler change was squeezed in after hours. The customers boiler had given them 16yrs of loyal service and it was finally time to swap it out for this hugely powerful Vaillant boiler.

The recall applies to all production of these models with a production date of prior to the 8th of January 2024.

Hazard
The product presents a risk of fire due to the dry operation, meaning the boiler lights gas but the heat generated does not cool it. There have been three incidents of boilers that have been able to continue to operate when the boiler heat exchanger has been full of air at a low pressure. This has allowed the heat exchanger and associated plastic components to be subject to significant heat allowing the plastic to flash to flame and result in fire outside of the appliance. There has also been a report of a customer having to extinguish flames.

Corrective action
Ideal has launched a modification programme to address the safety risk and has advised that customers can continue to use their boiler which should be repressurised to 1.5 bar. Ideal Heating provides high efficiency boilers which include Combi boilers, system boilers and new boilers. Find an installer for a new boiler.

So, the 'Stealth tax' is taking hold.
This post is just to let everyone here know that the GAS BOILER tax, also known as the 'stealth tax' is coming into effect for some manufacturers in January whilst others such as Ideal boilers have already come into effect.
This will affect everyone that will be buying a new gas boiler.

"What will this mean for me?"

Ultimately, you will be paying more for the boiler you want installed, no later the brand.

"Can I avoid this 'tax'?"

No! This tax is put on at point of sale from the manufacturer and wholesaler.
(The only way to try and beat the 'tax' is to buy your boiler before the 'tax' kicks in and then you can fit it any time after with no added tax.)

" How much is the tax?"

That will depend on the brand you opt for and is decided by the government based on the boiler manufacturers low carbon use aiming other things.
Some may be as little as an additional £100 before VAT, whilst others (we have heard) may be in excess of £300 before the VAT.

"Why does this tax exist?"

It is there to help (supposedly) reduce the upfront cost of heat pumps for those that buy them after 2035.
Support the manufacturing process of heat pumps.
Grow the number of skilled heat pump installers (as skilled as many of the dodgy gas fitters we all know are out there) amongst many other reasons.

This post isn't to scare monger nor get you to buy a boiler from me, it is there to help you appreciate that engineers nationwide will not be able to get around this cost and therefore your boiler changes will simply cost more.

I am not bashing Heat Pumps as I do believe that when installed correctly, they are a good product.

Another home upgraded with an unvented hot water cylinder.
This has given the whole house equal mains water pressure to all basins, showers, toilets and the kitchen sink.
This allows the use of multiple showers or baths to be used at the same time without having low water pressure.

We rushed down to help out a friend in St Ives at the weekend. Another new boiler and another 10yr manufacturers parts and labour warranty.

With the costs of wholesale energy rising and in turn our energy costs going up, I am finding many people have some slight confusion over the new ’price cap’
Hopefully this will help a few of you out there. 👍

Lots of confusion around the energy price cap - your bills are NOT capped at £2.5k. Rather it is the unit rate of gas and electricity (aka the cost per kW hour) that is capped: 34p per kWh for electric & 10.3p per kWh for gas.

Your total bill can still be over £2.5k if you use more gas & electric - see the table below. It can also be under £2.5k if you use less gas and electric.

It is important not to relax over energy use and try to minimise as much as possible. Even the capped prices are x4 higher for gas than 18 months ago and x3 higher for electricity.

If you have just signed up to a fixed deal where you are paying more, say 50p per kWh and 14p per kWh, you will pay the capped price of 34p and 10.3p and your energy supplier will take the balance from the 'energy tariff deficit fund' aka Energy Price Guarantee set up by the Government.

If you are paying less than 34p and 10.3p for your energy, you will pay your lower tariff as it is under the cap until the contract ends, then you will pay the capped price. The Energy Price Guarantee will last for 2 years from 1st October.
