If I'm not winning, I will milk it for all it's worth ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

This painting (which I love) is from the competition on Sunday. And it's the first plein air competition I haven't either won outright or won a smaller prize. Despite being dead sure it was my best competition painting to date ๐Ÿ˜

Yesterday I competed in the plein air competition. I have never done a painting in a competition and thought, "this has actually got a good chance of winning it". But that's exactly what I thought when I finished this!

It went just about as well as a 3.5 hour painting could go, managing to create a coherent landscape near Broadway Tower in very changeable weather, lighting and cloud conditions. I'm really pleased with the scattered light coming through the clouds and hitting the endless fields stretching away into the distance. One of my best yet!

And the painting won...

I'm sure there's a lesson in there somewhere ๐Ÿ˜‚

Huge congratulations to the 1st-6th place prize winners, it was lovely to see everyone's varied works from the day. And it was great to chat to and (with the lovely golden lighting in the framed painting).

Very pleased to win 'best urban artwork' prize at the Cheltenham plein air competition today!

Threatening rain made me head under cover and tackle a scene which I wouldn't usually attempt to do in one sitting. I struggled with this painting all day long and it was a relief to hand it in ๐Ÿ˜… and I'm ecstatic to come away with a prize :) thank you for a great day โค๏ธ

For some reason I went mad and decided to paint out in this heat ๐Ÿฅต

A good few hours down the Barbican slowly building up Southside Street, slightly inspired by who is in Southern Italy and is creating wonderful architectural pieces. Mine still needs another couple of sessions yet!

This is a step-by-step guide to how I created my 'Overall Winner' 1st prize painting at for the plein air competition. I hope it shows some of my process, thinking, and decisions I make when painting outdoors - which is my favourite thing to do ๐Ÿ˜„

It was a great day in a beautiful setting. We had to contend with the occasional light shower but thankfully the rain held off until the end of the day. I set up by the pond, doing my best to capture the reflections of the light coming through the trees and bouncing off the water, dispersed by the lily pads and floating plants. I painted it all back to front, spending a lot of time removing paint which felt a bit like anti-painting ๐Ÿ˜‚ I'll post some progress pictures up tomorrow so you can see what I mean. And it was looking a bit meh until the final few minutes where some sharp eyed help from my amazing wife threw it all into focus and I was able to resolve something approaching a cohesive painting.

It was great to catch the prolific painter who won last year, who created a lovely textured floral piece and who received a highly commended award.

Congratulations to all the prize winners! It was a really high standard of work from I think around 50 artists who competed. And it was great to meet some new painting friends!

I think I have been invited back to the gardens to create more work over the next year. It's a bit of a drive from Plymouth, but I'll be back I'm sure to capture some more of this stunning place!

Some pictures of a start on yesterdays painting. Down at Mutton Cove in Mount wise, looking towards the Mashford boat builders across the river. What I'd give to do a painting from there!

I'm really not sure about this one, I introduced the purple a little too late in the process and it's bothering me. But it's a good composition at least, your eye cutting through a few gaps and slabby forms. These photos show the way I build a composition, literally wiping it out from the loose paint. It needs another two or three sessions to work on this style, building up the kayers of thinned oils.

I'll explain more in my newsletter, so if you haven't already, head to my website and sign up.

Personally, I think understanding more about pigments and surface has evolved my art considerably. Transparency, particle size, tinting strength, undertones - all of these are a science to learn, which in turn makes the art flourish. It's not just understanding shape, tone and colour - your materials are everything too.
