Mark Talbot Carpentry

Mark Talbot Carpentry I make furniture and household objects using mainly traditional methods and from solid native timbers, which I source locally wherever possible.

My work is made from trees, and I try to keep that fact apparent in the finished piece. Bespoke but affordable I am a cabinet maker and craftsman who loves British native timbers. The wood I use is always from sustainable sources and mostly for a particular purpose or setting. Over the years I have been asked to make everything from church fonts to boot cupboards and most things in between. Unlike

many things in the instant and throwaway society that we live in, my furniture is meant to last: although each piece is made for a specific person, it is intended that it lasts for many years and hopefully be passed from one generation to the next.

I have been working away making these oak benches for various locations in Northumberland this year. They are now all installed and I'm really pleased with how they have turned out!

The start to 2026 in the new workshop has been great! It's been a real treat to have lots of natural light and warmth to work by ( I'm getting too old to be wearing three coats to work in! ) I've been working on some oak benches that will be heading to Northumberland soon and it's going well...

2025 has been such a hectic year that I haven't posted on social media very much! The big news of the year has been that I now have a new, bigger and better workshop. I won't be moving far as I'm only going to the next village of Pelton. I've been moving out from my old workshop over the last month or so, and 2026 will see the opening of a new chapter for Mark Talbot carpentry and I'm really excited and looking forward to it...

The great thing about going to a cabinet maker is that you can ask them to make exactly what you want. This week a customer asked me if I could make a replacement rolling pin for one that she bought on honeymoon 45 years ago. Unfortunately her husband had been using it to smash up ice and in the process, the rolling pin was obliterated! The customer was not happy with him (I think he survived!). I've also made her a cutting board. By no means a big job, but this is the beauty of going to an individual like me, you get just what you're looking for and you could never buy it in the shops.

This week I said goodbye to a machine that I have had for 20 or so years. It was a Wilson mortice machine that simply wasn't being used. I was sorry to see this machine go as I can still remember when I bought it. It must weigh about 400Kg and was a challenge to get on the van by myself, but where there's a will there's a way! Wilson the morticer is now heading off to a warmer climate and is going to be part of a school building project in Tanzania! These old machines really do go on forever and not like the modern stuff that has a very short useful life in comparison.
Bon voyage Wilson my old very heavy friend...
