Pembroke Design Limited

Pembroke Design Limited PDL are Architects & Surveyors based in Pembroke Dock Quite simply, we listen, we create and we deliver.

Pembroke Design was originally founded some forty years ago, with our present format having celebrated 25 years of multi-disciplinary practice in 2007. During that time we have won over 45 awards for our work in Architecture and Surveying; to find out more information about us go to the "about us" page. Our professional ethic is to encourage the team approach to problem solving on every project, l

arge or small, and to include the client in the process as much as is practically possible in order to attempt to better their goals within the multitude of constraints of the construction industry. It is also fundamental to the thinking within the Practice that we keep our client-focused philosophy intact at all times, and on every project, regardless of scale. Pembroke Design produces solutions that are both consented and implemented and our approach is always flexible, innovative and analysis based. We often find that it is the simplest solution to logical planning or the buildings aesthetic that works best, as Leonardo da Vinci once famously said... "simplicity is the utlimate sophistication"

LLANDEILO MARKET HALL

Following our input from concept through to completion, PDL are proud that the transformation of the Market Hall in Llandeilo was officially opened on 29th June. This bold £4.2million scheme to reimagine the derelict Grade II listed former market building has created 17 new business units, most of which already have tenants, a café and an impressive multi-use space for indoor markets and events, supporting 45 jobs.

Funded by Carmarthenshire County Council, the Welsh Government and the European Union and constructed by T. Richard Jones, Yr Hen Farchnad is another example of the success of our strong partnership approach, Julian and our team having worked closely with Cadw and Carmarthenshire CC’s conservation and planning officers to sensitively integrate the old with the new, including a contemporary first floor addition behind the original parapet, to create a sustainable and exciting asset for the town and surrounding area, allowing the building to once again become a thriving hub for the local community.

Replacement Dwelling, Bosherston

Construction is well underway for a replacement dwelling near Bosherston, South pembrokeshire, that is due for completion in August. The existing dwelling was an old “woolaway” bungalow built by and occupied by a well respected local family back in the 1960’s. The younger generation of the same family will occupy the new dwelling after completion.

PEMBROKE COTTAGE OBTAINS PLANNING PERMISSION AFTER SIX YEARS

PDL and our Client are delighted to have secured Planning Permission to restore an old building near the historic town wall, located on The Commons, Pembroke.

Despite previously obtaining a Listed Building Consent in 2017 and having full support from all consultees, a Planning Consent was refused due to flood risk issues.

Years of effort by PDL and our Client in attempting to explain the importance of this restoration project, which will improve Pembroke’s historical heritage, continued to be ignored, with flood risk being the one and only reason not to grant permission.

PDL’s continued efforts, along with the Client and Town Council support, finally paid off, when the same proposal as submitted in 2017, was granted unanimous approval by a full Planning Committee earlier this month.

As was the case in 2017, the restoration project includes all normal mitigation against flood risk, including fail safe escape routes in the event of a serious flood, which incidentally, has never occurred along that stretch of The Commons.

Works will commence shortly.

PLANNING REFUSAL REVERSED

PDL are delighted that Planning Permission has now been granted to construct a new shower facility at Meadow Farm Campsite, Tenby, which is located high above the popular resort, with unrivalled views towards the town, sea and Caldey Island beyond. The new building will be powered by solar and biomass heating and will provide modern showers and toilets, as well as stores and reception.

The Planning Appeal work was carried out by Jason Evans, EvansBanks Planning, based in Cross Hands, Carmarthenshire

TRIBUTE

Pembroke Design are saddened to learn that Martin Hurlow, a much respected Building Contractor and Developer based in Tenby, has passed away. PDL, and in particular, Andrew, who worked on many of Martin’s jobs over a 30 year period, send our condolences to Martin’s family at this very sad time. The “gentle giant” will be sorely missed.

Replacement Dwelling and Barn - The Folly, Portfield Gate

Welcome news received recently from PCNP to demolish existing structures and replace with a four bed farmhouse and two bed barn. The aesthetic is based on the traditional vernacular, whilst adding a touch of modern design to certain areas. A sensitive approach. Bat mitigation measures built into the scheme by providing bat and swift boxes in the refurbished stable and pigsty.

Redundant Chapels

Both Julian and Andrew have two interesting projects to deal with, that unfortunately, due to COVID 19, are still at the early stages of the architectural design process. Julian is dealing with one on the border of Carmarthenshire, whilst the other that Pembroke Design have secured, is located in mid-Pembrokeshire. Each project has its challenges, but with simplistic and cost effective design thought, both will create impressive new dwellings for the owners. Once restrictions have lifted, each project can move onto Planning Permission, Building Regulations, tender process and eventually, a building contractor can be engaged to carry out the conversions and change of use.

House Renovation & Extension

PDL are well advanced in preparing detailed drawings for renovating, extending and modernising an old stone built property that was partly rebuilt in the 1990’s using modern building material. The building has since become derelict and is in poor structural condition, so Pembroke Design and our Client have approached this project with the aim of mixing traditional with modern, but using sustainable materials, whilst respecting its historic value. Timber sash windows will replace plastic, natural will replace the artificial, and a mix of timber cladding and zinc with aluminium frame, adds interest to the overall theme.
The idea is to restore the old cottage with chimney stack, and create an open view towards the open countryside.

CONVERSIONS AND REUSE OF FORMER PUMPING STATIONS

Many of these buildings have, over the years, become empty whilst the utility companies create more modern ways of distributing water. The buildings often are sold on and various changes of use from residential to commercial can be explored.

Below is a recent example of a conversion to a dwelling house of one such pumping station in Pembrokeshire, designed by Meirion Williams and drawn by Jordan Chapman.
