When you're comparing window quotes, the energy rating is a key tool in your decision making, so it’s important to understand it.

The BFRC scale runs A++ down to E, and it beats a bare U-value because it rolls three things into one score: heat lost through the whole window, free heat gained from the sun, and air leakage around it. Anything A or above is "energy positive" across a year it gains more warmth from sunlight than it loses.

Two things to check on any quote: that the rating covers the whole window, frame and all, not just the glass, and that it clears the current Building Regs minimum.

Modern double glazing already comfortably beats what Building Regs ask for. Triple lowers the U-value again, but on many houses the walls, roof and draughts lose far more heat than the glass does, so the extra pane makes less difference than people expect.

Where it does earn its place: New builds and Passivhaus projects, homes on exposed or northern coastal plots, anywhere on a heat pump, big glazed areas, and rooms with a serious noise problem.

If you're in a period or listed home, you know the story: the original windows are drafty and cold, but you can't just tear them out, even if you wanted to.

Secondary glazing is the way around that problem. A slim second pane goes on the inside, so nothing changes outside and the original stays put. The wider air gap cuts noise like double glazing while knocking back drafts and heat loss at the same time.

It's also fully reversible, so an easy yes for conservation officers.

Glass is one of the most premium feeling additions you can add to a room — right up until the hot weather hits

A single 1m by 1m clear rooflight can pull in around the heat of a 540W heater on a bright afternoon. Multiply that across a fully glazed extension and you've built a greenhouse. The fix isn't less glass, it's the right glass: solar-control units with a low g-value let the light through but turn the heat down.
